Borg Backup Server Hosting Live In 5 Minutes

Deploy Borg Backup Server hosting and manage BorgBackup for all your machines from one dashboard on your own domain. xCloud runs the pinned Borg Backup Server 2.98.8 image as a single container, generates the admin password, mounts the persistent bbs_data volume that holds the database and every repository, and publishes the dashboard over HTTPS while agents send encrypted backups over SSH.

What is Borg Backup Server?

Borg Backup Server is a self-hosted web interface for BorgBackup. It runs on your server and manages backups from the machines you add as clients, covering scheduling, retention, restore and monitoring from one dashboard.

From Sign-Up to a Live Backup Server In Just 3 Easy Steps

A Borg backup server normally means a web app, a database, sshd, a domain, a certificate and repository storage before the first client is added. This is the same result without assembling any of it.

  1. Step 01

Create your xCloud account and pick Borg Backup Server from the OneClick catalog. Choose your domain and target server — there are no extra fields to fill in, because xCloud generates the credentials.

  2. Step 02

    We Deploy It For You

One click. We start the official Borg Backup Server image, pinned by immutable digest, as a single container that runs Apache and PHP, MariaDB, ClickHouse, sshd and cron together, mount the bbs_data volume, generate the admin password, and publish the dashboard over HTTPS with the SSH endpoint on its own TCP port.

  3. Step 03

Add A Client And Install The Agent

Wait two to three minutes for first boot, open your HTTPS URL and sign in as admin with the password from the credentials panel. Change that password on the profile page, add a client, and install the agent on each machine you want to back up.

Everything Borg Backup Server Does, On Your Own Server

Borg Backup Server runs in full here: a central dashboard for BorgBackup, with repositories stored on a volume you own.

  • One Dashboard For Many Machines

Manage BorgBackup for Linux, Mac and Windows clients from one web interface, with scheduling, retention policies and manual runs.

  • Agents Check In With The Server

Endpoints poll the server for tasks and send backups over SSH, so the server does not need SSH access into your machines.

  • SSH Append-Only Mode

Agents can back up and restore but cannot delete or prune repositories, which limits what a compromised client can do.

  • Restore From The Browser

Browse an archive and restore files at file level from the dashboard, or download an archive as .tar.gz.

  • Offsite Sync And Alerts

Optionally sync repositories to S3 and get email and push alerts when backups need attention.

  • Repositories On Your Volume

The database, SSH host keys and every Borg repository live on the persistent bbs_data volume, and the clients, SSH access and archives survived an xCloud Restart in QA.

Everything You Need To Run Your Backup Server 24/7

  • Server backups and snapshots

What You Can Do With Borg Backup Server

  • Centralise backups for a small fleet

Add each Linux, Mac or Windows machine as a client and see schedules, retention and recent runs in one place.

  • Limit the damage a compromised client can do

Use SSH append-only mode so agents can back up and restore but cannot delete or prune repositories.

  • Restore a single file without a full recovery

Browse an archive in the dashboard and restore files, or download the archive as .tar.gz.

  • Keep an offsite copy

Optionally sync repositories to S3 and get email and push alerts about the result.

Hear what people are saying about us

See why agencies, developers, startups, and growing businesses choose xCloud to power their projects.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!
Brian Geovanny
I've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.

I'm moving my servers to xCloud, a cloud control panel by M Asif Rahman and the WPDeveloper team. Their roadmap looks interesting and no, there are no team mates nor API limits with xCloud! #xCloud #wordpress #hosting

xCloud is like having an expert server team on call — without the big agency costs. It's given me back my time and given my clients peace of mind. Highly recommended for freelancers and small teams who want reliable performance and security.

xCloud isn't just a solution. It's like one of that friend who got your back when you screw things up pretty bad.

Trust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍

So far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.

Came from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.

I've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony Lewis
I came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowell
I like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose

Dear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

How do I sign in after deployment?

Open the HTTPS URL from xCloud after first boot finishes, which takes two to three minutes. Sign in as admin with the generated password from the credentials panel, then change it on the profile page.

Do I need to open ports on my client machines?

No. Agents poll the server over HTTPS and send backups over SSH to the server, so the server does not connect into the clients.

What runs alongside Borg Backup Server?

Nothing separate. The single container bundles the web app, MariaDB, ClickHouse, sshd and cron, so there is no database or sidecar to manage.

Is the SSH port public?

Yes. The SSH endpoint is published as a raw TCP host port and is reachable from the internet, so restrict it with your firewall to your agent addresses where you can.

Why do my agents fail when the domain is behind Cloudflare?

Cloudflare's proxy does not carry the SSH port. If the domain sits behind the proxy, set Server Host / IP in Settings to the server IP.

What should I back up?

The whole bbs_data volume, including the APP_KEY value from the stable .env. It holds the database, every Borg repository and the SSH host keys. Without APP_KEY, stored SSH keys and S3 credentials cannot be decrypted.

How much disk should I plan for?

Repositories live on the same volume as the application, so size the disk for two to three times the data you protect.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update Borg Backup Server?

No. The template pins Borg Backup Server 2.98.8 by immutable digest, the in-app upgrade is not supported on this template, and a redeploy returns to the pinned version. To upgrade, read the upstream release notes, then bump the readable tag and digest together. Server-level backups and snapshots are available on every Cloud VPS.

Have agent backups been tested end to end?

Not on this page's evidence. The verify run did not install the real agent or run an agent-initiated backup; it ran a Borg client over the published SSH port with a test key using the same forced command.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template's baseline asks for 2 CPU cores, 2048 MB of RAM and 20 GB of disk; measured idle use in QA was about 290 MiB for the container. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, with real headroom above that baseline.

What survives a restart?

Clients, their SSH access and the Borg repositories and archives on the bbs_data volume survived an xCloud Restart in QA, verified by restoring a test file.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Borg Backup Server?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Borg Backup Server project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
