What is Many Notes?

Many Notes is a Markdown note-taking web application designed for simplicity. You create or import vaults, which are storage containers for your files, and organise your notes right away, either in one vault or across several.

It uses a database to power its features, but your files are also saved in the filesystem, so you keep control over your vault structure and can reach the files easily. The project is open source under the MIT License.

How do I sign in?

Use the administrator email you entered at install and the generated password from the installation credentials. Allow about a minute after the first start while Many Notes runs its database migrations and builds the search index.

Can strangers create accounts on my site?

No. Registration is switched off during install, so only the administrator you were given can sign in. If you want to invite others, enable registration in Settings inside Many Notes.

What runs alongside Many Notes?

Nothing else is deployed. The template is a single container; the search index and live updates run inside it, and the search index is never published.

What is the Application Key and why keep it?

It is shown in the protected installation credentials and encrypts sessions and stored secrets. Keep a copy with your backups and do not change it: changing it signs every user out and invalidates encrypted data.

What should I back up?

The database volume (many_notes_database) and the vault volume (many_notes_vaults) together, plus the Application Key. The search and logs volumes are also persistent.

Backups in xCloud

Can I change the administrator password later?

Yes, inside Many Notes. ADMIN_EMAIL and ADMIN_PASSWORD are read once at install to create the administrator, so editing them in the environment file later does not change the account.

Is there a file upload limit?

Yes. Uploads and vault imports are limited to 100 MB by the app's web server and by the proxy in front of it.

Does Many Notes send email?

Not until you configure it. Outgoing email, such as password reset, is off until you add the MAIL_* values that are commented out in the environment file.

Does Many Notes contact GitHub?

Many Notes checks GitHub for new releases. The administrator can turn this off in Settings.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update Many Notes?

No. The template pins Many Notes 0.18.0 by immutable digest; new installations use the pinned release, existing sites are not automatically upgraded. Back up first, read the upstream release notes, then bump the readable image tag and digest together on your own schedule. Server-level backups and snapshots are available on every Cloud VPS.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template's baseline asks for 1 CPU core, 512 MB of RAM and 2 GB of disk; measured idle use in QA was about 175 MiB. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, with real headroom above that baseline.

What survives a restart?

Notes, vaults and search data on the persistent named volumes. In QA, a vault created before an xCloud Restart was still listed afterwards.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Many Notes?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Many Notes project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Many Notes project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
