MariaDB Hosting Live In 5 Minutes
MariaDB hosting on xCloud gives your applications a self-hosted database server on a machine you control. Deploy MariaDB from the OneClick catalog and xCloud starts the pinned 12.2 container, creates your app database and app user, generates the passwords, mounts the mariadb_data volume and shows you the host, port and connection string. MariaDB is a data service rather than a web app, so your own code or the mariadb client connects directly.

What is MariaDB?
MariaDB is an open source, self-hosted relational database: a SQL server your applications reach over the MySQL protocol. Its README says it was designed as a drop-in replacement of MySQL with more features and new storage engines, which is why teams run self-hosted MariaDB as an alternative to MySQL or a hosted service such as Amazon RDS. It is released under GPL version 2 only.
On xCloud this template deploys MariaDB 12.2 as the mariadb:12.2 image on your own Cloud VPS, creating the database and app user you choose on first boot. Data lives in the mariadb_data volume. It is a data service, not a web app: there is no domain or HTTPS, and clients connect to the server IP and a published port. You own the server and its data.
From Sign-Up to a Live MariaDB In Just 3 Easy Steps
Running MariaDB yourself means a container, a database, a user with grants, a root password and a persistent volume before anything can connect. Here the install form asks for four values and fills the rest.
Step 01
Sign Up
Create your xCloud account and pick MariaDB from the OneClick catalog. Choose an app username, an app database name and passwords, or leave the password fields blank to have 24-character ones generated.
Step 02
We Deploy It For You
One click. We start the mariadb:12.2 image, let its entrypoint create your database, app user and grants on first boot, mount mariadb_data at /var/lib/mysql, and publish container port 3306 on a host port of the server's IP.
Step 03
Connect Your App
Copy the mysql:// connection string from the credentials panel into your application, or test it with the mysql client using the host, port and app user. Then lock the port down to your client IPs.
Everything MariaDB Does, On Your Own Server
This template runs the MariaDB 12.2 server with an app user, a root user and a persistent data directory, so your tables stay on your own server.
MySQL-Compatible Protocol
MariaDB was designed as a drop-in replacement of MySQL, so MySQL clients and mysql:// connection strings connect to it. Check compatibility for your specific application before you migrate.
InnoDB Storage Engine
MariaDB keeps tables in InnoDB tablespaces inside the data directory, so one volume holds your tables, system tables and user grants together.
App User And Database
The first boot creates the database and user you name in the install form, with grants on that database, so your application never needs root.
Separate Root Password
A generated root password is kept for maintenance and backups, shown masked in the credentials panel and not meant for application connection strings.
Persistent Data Directory
The mariadb_data volume is mounted at /var/lib/mysql, so tables survive a container restart or redeploy of the same install.
Logical Dumps
mariadb-dump runs against the live container for a logical backup of all databases, which you can restore elsewhere without copying the raw data directory.
Everything You Need To Run Your MariaDB 24/7
Dedicated server hosting for MariaDB, so the machine under your database is not your problem.
- MariaDB 12.2 deployed instantly
- App user and root credentials
- Generated 24-character passwords
- Data volume on your server
- Docker app backups you schedule
- Server security updates included
- 30+ server locations
- Unused balance refunded
What You Can Do With MariaDB
Give a PHP or web app its own database
A developer points an application at the app database with the app user's connection string, keeping the database on a server of their own instead of sharing a host with the web app.
Run a dev and staging database for a team
A small team deploys one MariaDB for shared development data. Each developer connects with the app credentials from the install, and root stays reserved for maintenance and dumps.
Move a MySQL workload to a server you control
A team running an application on MySQL tests it against MariaDB, which was designed as a drop-in replacement, and keeps the data on a dedicated server they rent before cutting over.
Replace a managed database with a flat server price
A team leaving a managed database service moves its tables to MariaDB on a Cloud VPS, with the data directory on a named volume it can dump with mariadb-dump and back up itself.
MariaDB vs Alternatives
- MySQL
- MariaDB's README names MySQL as its base and says MariaDB was designed as a drop-in replacement. xCloud has a separate MySQL page if you want that server; this template runs MariaDB 12.2.
- Amazon RDS
- Amazon RDS is a hosted database service inside AWS. Running MariaDB on an xCloud Cloud VPS puts the server, the passwords and the mariadb_data volume under your own account at a flat monthly server price.
- PostgreSQL
- PostgreSQL is a different relational database with its own OneClick page and its own client protocol. Choose this template when your application already speaks the MySQL protocol.
- Percona Server
- Percona Server is another MySQL-compatible database server and a separate project. This template runs the official MariaDB 12.2 image with an app user, a root password and a single data volume.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!
Brian GeovannyI've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.
Kevin PinedaI'm moving my servers to xCloud, a cloud control panel by M Asif Rahman and the WPDeveloper team. Their roadmap looks interesting and no, there are no team mates nor API limits with xCloud! #xCloud #wordpress #hosting
Leo KooHow Cloud Nine Web Elevated Client Experience While Streamlining Hosting Operations using xCloud
Ed EllinghamxCloud is like having an expert server team on call — without the big agency costs. It's given me back my time and given my clients peace of mind. Highly recommended for freelancers and small teams who want reliable performance and security.
Dumitru ButucelxCloud isn't just a solution. It's like one of that friend who got your back when you screw things up pretty bad.
Waqar AhmedTrust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍
Rahul SinghSo far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.
Massimo VillaCame from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.
Gerson ElI've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony LewisI came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowellI like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose
David McCanHow Kevin Heinrichs Cut Hosting Costs by 84% While Running WooCommerce & Node.js Sites Efficiently
Kevin HeinrichsI had 150 sites on cloudways and am in the process of moving them to xcloud. Much faster and better priced.
Dan SpinozaDear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.
Rahil MaknojiaCame from runcloud. Tried xcloud and never came back.

Blaine MooreFrequently Asked Questions
Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.
Is MariaDB a drop-in replacement for MySQL?
That is how MariaDB's README describes its design: a drop-in replacement of MySQL with more features and new storage engines. Compatibility still depends on the application, so test your own app and read MariaDB's compatibility notes before you move production data onto this install.
How do I connect an application to MariaDB?
Copy the mysql:// connection string from the credentials panel, which holds the app user, app password, server IP, port and database name. Or run the mysql client with -h, -P and -u. Use the app user in your application, not root, and restrict the port to your clients.
What is the difference between MariaDB and MySQL?
MariaDB's README says MySQL is its base and that MariaDB adds features and new storage engines, with separate pages on features and compatibility. They are different projects, and xCloud has its own MySQL page. This template runs MariaDB 12.2, so choose it if that is what your app targets.
Can you self-host MariaDB with Docker?
Yes, and this MariaDB Docker hosting template does it for you: the official mariadb:12.2 image under Docker Compose on your Cloud VPS, with the mariadb_data volume and generated passwords. It runs on your own server, not in a MariaDB cloud account, and you get a host and port to connect to.
How much RAM does MariaDB need?
The template manifest asks for 512 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 2 GB of disk as a floor. Real needs grow with your data size, connections and query load. This page sells the 6 GB tier, which leaves ample headroom above the floor for a database that shares a server.
How do I upgrade MariaDB?
Upgrades are not automatic. The 12.2 tag follows patch releases inside minor 12.2, and existing installs are unaffected by template changes. A major-version jump, such as 11.x to 12.x, needs mariadb-upgrade after replacing the container, so read the upgrade notes and take a dump first.
How do I back up MariaDB?
Back up the mariadb_data volume, which holds the full data directory including system tables, user grants and InnoDB tablespaces. For a logical backup, run mariadb-dump --all-databases against the live container as root. Keep copies off the server and test a restore.
Is MariaDB open source?
Yes. MariaDB's README says it is available only under version 2 of the GNU General Public License, without the any-later-version clause; the COPYING file is linked from this page at the pinned 12.2 line. The xCloud bill covers the Cloud VPS beneath it, not MariaDB.
Is MariaDB exposed to the internet?
Yes, on its port. The template publishes container port 3306 on a host port bound to 0.0.0.0, so anyone with the credentials can connect. Restrict that port to your known client IPs with the server firewall before production, and give applications the app user rather than root.
Which credentials does the install create?
Four install fields: an app username (default mariadb), an app database (default app_db), an app password and a root password, each password generated at 24 characters if left blank. Editing them later does not rotate a running database, so change the password with ALTER USER inside MariaDB.
Where does my data live?
On the mariadb_data volume of your own server, mounted at /var/lib/mysql, so it survives a container restart. No third party holds it, and mariadb-dump gives you an export whenever you want to move it elsewhere.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
