What is Mathesar?

Self-hosted Mathesar is a web application that makes working with PostgreSQL databases simple and powerful. Upstream says it lets users of all technical skill levels view, edit, query and collaborate on data in a spreadsheet-like interface with no code. It lists a data explorer query builder, shareable forms, import and export, schema editing and Postgres-based access control. Because it is self-hosted, upstream notes your data never leaves your servers. It is GPL-3.0 licensed and labelled public beta upstream.

Yes. Mathesar is GPL-3.0 licensed and its code is open. Upstream labels it public beta, stable enough for production use. xCloud bills the dedicated Cloud VPS only, and the template adds no paid Mathesar tier.

Can I run Mathesar with Docker?

Yes, and this template is Mathesar Docker hosting without the assembly. It starts the mathesar/mathesar 0.12.0 service, the Caddy gateway image and PostgreSQL 17, all pinned by digest, proxies the gateway behind HTTPS and mounts four volumes.

How much RAM does Mathesar need?

App, gateway and PostgreSQL together set a manifest floor of 2 GB of RAM, two cores and 10 GB of disk. A Mathesar cloud install on the 6 GB Cloud VPS sold here leaves room for bigger tables and more users.

Who creates the first Mathesar administrator?

You do, on first visit. Open the site and follow Mathesar's first-user flow to create the administrator account straight away, because whoever reaches the address first can do it. The install form asks for nothing and generates the database credentials.

Can Mathesar connect to my existing PostgreSQL database?

Upstream lists connecting to an existing Postgres database or setting one up from scratch. The template runs its own PostgreSQL for Mathesar's metadata and databases you create. Connecting an external database is an upstream feature, so make sure the server can reach it.

Can I build forms in Mathesar?

Yes. Upstream lists building and sharing forms to collect data from anyone via a unique link, with submissions saved as new records. Anyone with the link can submit, so treat the link like a public address and review what the form writes.

Can I import CSV files into Mathesar?

Yes. The template README says you can create tables or import CSV data from the normal interface, and upstream lists import and export. Uploaded data files are kept on the mathesar_media volume. Try a small file first to check column types.

How do I back up Mathesar?

Back up all four volumes as one coordinated set: mathesar_postgres_data for metadata and your databases, mathesar_media for uploaded files, mathesar_static for assets and mathesar_secrets for application secret state. Test a restore on a spare server before relying on it.

How do I update Mathesar?

Your install stays on its pinned 0.12.0 version until you adopt a newer template version. Back up all four volumes first and read the upstream release notes. Afterwards sign in, open an existing table and confirm uploads still load.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
