What is MeshCentral?

Self-hosted MeshCentral is, in its README's words, a full computer management web site. You run your own web server to remotely manage and control computers on a local network or anywhere on the internet: create a device group, install an agent on each computer, and use remote desktop, terminal and file access, with two-factor authentication and an Android agent. It stands in for a hosted remote support service and is Apache-2.0 licensed.

How do I create the first MeshCentral administrator account?

By registering it yourself. There is no generated or default credential: the first account you create on MeshCentral's own sign-up screen automatically becomes administrator, and further self-registration is disabled. Register straight after install, before sharing the address.

Are MeshCentral plugins enabled?

No. This template explicitly disables MeshCentral's plugin system, so extensions that depend on plugins will not load. The core console, device groups, agents, terminal, desktop and file access are unaffected, so check your needs before relying on a plugin.

Which devices can I manage with MeshCentral?

Only devices you own or are explicitly authorised to administer. Review account permissions, multi-factor authentication and event retention before enrolling agents on production hardware, because an administrator can control every enrolled machine, and make sure the people who own those machines agree.

Why does MeshCentral have four volumes?

Each holds a different kind of data: meshcentral_data for configuration, certificates and the embedded database, meshcentral_files for managed files, meshcentral_web for customisations and meshcentral_backups for application-generated backups. Restore all four from the same point in time, so they match.

What should I back up on a MeshCentral server?

All four volumes together, with meshcentral_data as the critical restore point because it holds the certificates and database. Enrolled agents trust that server identity, so losing it means re-enrolling devices. Copy them off the server and test a restore.

How do I upgrade MeshCentral?

Upgrades never happen automatically: the install stays on pinned release 1.2.5 until you adopt a newer template version. Take a coordinated backup of all four volumes first, read the upstream release notes, then check sign-in and that an enrolled agent reconnects.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
