What is MinIO?

Self-hosted MinIO here means Silo, a community-maintained fork of the MinIO object storage server made by Pigsty. It exposes an S3-compatible API and a web console for buckets, objects and access keys, so S3 clients, SDKs and backup tools can use your own server instead of a metered cloud bucket such as Amazon S3. The fork is not affiliated with MinIO, Inc. and is distributed under the AGPLv3.

On xCloud the template runs the pgsty/minio image at RELEASE.2026-06-18T00-00-00Z as a single container pinned by immutable digest. The minio_data volume holds all buckets, objects and metadata. The console is published over HTTPS on your domain, while the S3 API sits on a server port over plain HTTP, and xCloud generates a random root user and a 32-character root password.

How much RAM does MinIO need?

The template manifest asks for 1 CPU core, 256 MB of RAM and 5 GB of disk, and idle use measured in QA was about 72 MiB. This page sells the 6 GB tier, which leaves ample headroom, while the 100 GB NVMe disk bounds how much you can store.

Is MinIO free and open source?

Yes. The community fork shipped here is distributed under the GNU AGPLv3, per its README and LICENSE at the release tag. That licence has conditions if you offer the software to others over a network, so read it first. xCloud charges for the Cloud VPS, not the software.

What is the PGSTY Silo fork of MinIO?

Silo, formerly published as pgsty/minio, is a community-maintained fork of the upstream MinIO project made by Pigsty. Its README says changes are minimal and that it is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by MinIO, Inc. This template runs its pgsty/minio image.

Can I run MinIO with Docker?

Yes, and this is MinIO Docker hosting prepared for you: the template runs the pgsty/minio image as a single container pinned by immutable digest, with minio_data mounted at /data, the console behind HTTPS and the S3 API on its own server port.

Is the MinIO S3 API behind HTTPS?

No. The web console is behind xCloud-managed HTTPS, but the S3 API is published directly on a server port as plain HTTP so S3 clients can connect. Use strong access keys and restrict that port at the network level if only known hosts need it.

What is the upload size limit in the MinIO console?

Uploads through the browser console are limited to about 100 MB per request, because they pass through the HTTPS proxy. Larger objects should go through the S3 API with an S3 client that uses multipart upload, which is not subject to that proxy cap.

What should I back up on a MinIO server?

Take a backup of the minio_data volume, which holds every bucket, object and MinIO metadata file, and keep the root credential values from the Environment editor beside it. Test a restore before you depend on the copy.

Can MinIO be used as a backup target?

Yes, for tools that can write to an S3-compatible endpoint. Give each tool its own access key created in the console, point it at the S3 endpoint from your credentials, and remember that endpoint is plain HTTP unless you add your own TLS in front.

How do I upgrade MinIO?

Nothing upgrades it for you: the image is pinned by immutable digest at RELEASE.2026-06-18T00-00-00Z. Back up minio_data, read the fork's release notes, then raise the readable release tag and the digest together, or adopt a newer template version.

Is this MinIO cloud hosting?

It is your own storage server on a dedicated Cloud VPS that xCloud provisions, not a shared cloud bucket service. The container, the minio_data volume and the root credentials belong to your install, and no one else's objects sit alongside yours.

Is this the official MinIO image?

No. It runs the MinIO community fork from PGSTY, not an image from MinIO, Inc., and no partnership or endorsement between xCloud and MinIO, Inc. has been verified. Treat it as a community fork when you check licensing or support options.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
