What is SnappyMail?

SnappyMail is a web-based email client that describes itself as simple, modern, lightweight and fast, forked from RainLoop Webmail Community edition. It needs no database, removes social and tracking integrations such as Gravatar and X-Mailer, supports many IMAP RFCs, and offers PGP through OpenPGP.js, GnuPG and Mailvelope, a Sieve scripts editor, dark mode and an admin area. A self-hosted SnappyMail is a lightweight webmail client for your own mail provider. It is AGPL-3.0 licensed.

On xCloud it is SnappyMail 2.38.2, the image pinned by digest, as one container with its settings in the snappymail_data volume. You enter your IMAP and SMTP hostnames, ports and TLS modes at install. Mail stays on your provider's server, and users sign in with their normal mailbox credentials, while a separate admin URL and generated password protect the configuration.

How much RAM does SnappyMail need?

The floor in the template is 1 CPU core, 512 MB of RAM and 2 GB of disk. SnappyMail is a PHP client with no database, so the 6 GB plan is far above it. Mail itself stays on your provider's server.

Can you self-host SnappyMail with Docker?

Yes, and this template is snappymail docker hosting without the setup: the image pinned by digest, one snappymail_data volume, TLS verification to your mail server, a generated admin password and HTTPS on your own domain.

Does SnappyMail include a mail server?

No. Provide your mail provider's TLS-enabled IMAP and SMTP hostnames, ports and modes at install. Messages stay on the external IMAP server and need that provider's backup plan. Upstream removed POP3 support.

Does SnappyMail support PGP encryption?

Yes. Upstream uses OpenPGP.js, GnuPG and Mailvelope, and can generate and use ECDSA and EDDSA keys. Check which of these your users need, because key handling depends on the browser and extension.

How do I change the SnappyMail admin password?

Use Security, then Admin Password in the SnappyMail admin panel at the separate admin URL. ADMIN_PASSWORD only initialises the credential once, so editing it in the Environment editor later does not rotate it.

Is SnappyMail an alternative to Roundcube or RainLoop?

It is an upgraded fork of RainLoop Webmail Community edition that needs no database and adds dark mode, a Sieve scripts editor and OpenPGP.js v5, GnuPG and Mailvelope support. Roundcube is a separate webmail project, so try both with your mailbox.

Is SnappyMail free?

Yes. SnappyMail carries the AGPL-3.0 licence, so there is nothing to buy for the client. The Cloud VPS is the only cost, and this SnappyMail cloud install sits in front of the mail service you already pay for.

How do I back up SnappyMail?

Back up the complete snappymail_data volume, which holds configuration and settings. Mail is not stored here, so back it up through your mail provider. Keep your MAIL_DOMAIN and server settings with the backup.

How do I upgrade SnappyMail?

SnappyMail stays on its pinned 2.38.2 image until a newer template version is adopted. Copy the data volume beforehand and check the release notes. Redeploying keeps your settings in place.

Can the SnappyMail admin read user mail?

No. The administrator panel does not grant access to users' mailbox passwords. Keep the admin URL and its password private anyway, because it controls how the webmail connects to your mail servers.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
