What is WebThings Gateway?

WebThings Gateway is an open source Web of Things gateway: a self-hosted web application for monitoring and controlling a building over the web. It connects network and virtual WebThings, organises them in a private dashboard and runs local rules and automations. A self-hosted WebThings Gateway is an alternative to cloud smart home hubs that route your devices through a vendor, released under MPL-2.0, with documentation and a wiki published upstream.

Does WebThings Gateway support Zigbee or Z-Wave radios?

Not through this template. It uses Docker bridge networking, which supports network-accessible and virtual adapters. Physical-radio discovery and add-ons that need host networking or device passthrough are outside its supported scope, so choose a different setup if you need them.

What is the WebThings Gateway admin login?

The owner email you entered at install and the generated password in the credentials panel. ADMIN_EMAIL and ADMIN_PASSWORD only initialise the first native owner, so editing them later changes nothing. Change the password in Gateway settings.

Which devices can WebThings Gateway control?

Things reachable through a network or virtual adapter that you install from the add-ons list. Check each add-on's notes, because some need host access that this template does not provide, and test controls before using them in an automation.

Can you self-host WebThings Gateway with Docker?

Yes. Upstream provides a prebuilt Docker image for ARM and amd64, and this template is WebThings Gateway Docker hosting with the proxy included: the 2.0.0 image pinned by digest, one profile volume and HTTPS on your domain.

How much RAM does WebThings Gateway need?

The manifest asks for 2048 MB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 10 GB of disk. Add-ons and many things use more over time, and the 6 GB plan leaves ample room for other apps beside it.

Can I build automations in WebThings Gateway?

Yes. Upstream describes local rules and automations on your own gateway. Build one against a harmless thing, verify it fires, and after any restore test one adapter action and one automation before relying on them in daily use.

Is WebThings Gateway open source?

Yes, under MPL-2.0, so running it has no licence fee at all. You pay only for the Cloud VPS that hosts it, which gives you a WebThings Gateway cloud of your own rather than a vendor hub subscription.

Why is there an internal proxy in front of the gateway?

The gateway has a native HTTPS listener, and the internal nginx proxy connects to it so the gateway emits secure https and wss absolute URLs. xCloud then adds public HTTPS in front, and only the proxy's HTTP port reaches it.

How do I back up WebThings Gateway?

Back up the complete webthings_data volume. It maps to /home/node/.webthings and holds the SQLite database, owner accounts, settings, add-ons, certificates, logs, things and rules. Quiesce or stop the gateway first, keep copies off the server, and test a restore.

How do I upgrade WebThings Gateway?

The install stays on its pinned 2.0.0 image until you adopt a newer template version. Back up webthings_data and read the upstream release notes and profile migrations first. Nothing upgrades automatically, and a redeploy keeps the profile volume.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
