What is Gel?

Gel, formerly EdgeDB, is an open-source graph-relational database. Instead of tables and foreign keys you define object types with properties and links between them, and you query that data with EdgeQL, which returns structured objects rather than flat rows.

It ships with a strict type system, constraints, indexes, built-in schema migrations and a command-line tool, and applications connect through Gel's client libraries. Its storage engine is an embedded PostgreSQL that stays private inside the server.

What makes Gel different from a regular SQL database?

Gel is graph-relational: you define object types linked to each other and query them with EdgeQL, which returns nested objects directly instead of rows you have to join and reshape.

How do I connect to my Gel database?

Use the host, port, admin username and password from your installation credentials with the Gel CLI or a Gel client library. The connection uses TLS with a self-signed certificate, so configure your client to trust or allow it.

Is there a web interface?

No. This deployment is a database server for your applications and tools; there is no public web page. HTTP-based EdgeQL access is not enabled by default and needs Gel's edgeql_http extension in your schema.

What runs alongside Gel?

Nothing else. It is a single container, and Gel's embedded PostgreSQL storage engine listens only on an internal socket and is not exposed.

Is it exposed to the internet?

The Gel port is published on your server's public IP so remote apps can connect, and a password is required. Restrict it with the server firewall to the hosts that need it, and always connect over TLS, never plain http://, which would send the password unencrypted.

Can I change the admin password later?

Not through the environment. The password is applied only when the data directory is first created, so changing it there later does not rotate it. Change it through Gel's own administration instead.

Is my data kept after a restart?

Yes. The database files and the server's TLS certificate are on the gel_data volume, and QA confirmed both intact after an xCloud Restart.

What should I back up?

The gel_data volume, or an application-level backup made with gel dump, which is consistent without stopping writes.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template's baseline asks for 1 CPU core, 1024 MB of RAM and 2 GB of disk; measured use in QA was about 655 to 716 MiB, so 1 GB is the practical minimum. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, which leaves room for your data and queries.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update Gel?

No. The template pins Gel 6.11 by immutable digest; existing sites are not upgraded automatically. To upgrade, read the upstream release notes first and change the readable tag and digest together. Gel 7.x is a new major version, so follow the upstream upgrade guidance and take a gel dump backup before moving production data.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Gel?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Gel project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Gel project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
