What is Graylog?

Graylog is an open-source log management and search platform. You send it logs from servers and applications over inputs such as GELF, Syslog and Beats, search the messages from the web interface or the REST API, and build streams, alerts and dashboards on the same data.

Self-hosting it keeps your logs on a server you control instead of a vendor's cloud. Graylog Open is licensed under the SSPL: running it for your own logs is fine, while offering Graylog itself to third parties as a service triggers SSPL section 13 obligations.

How do I sign in?

Use the username admin and the generated password from the installation credentials. The account is created from the install settings, so the first visitor does not become admin.

Why are there no logs yet?

Graylog has no inputs by default. Open System > Inputs, launch one (for example GELF) and point your senders at the server address and the host port listed for it.

What runs alongside Graylog?

MongoDB and the Graylog data node (search engine), both private to the stack with no host ports.

Are the input ports protected?

No. GELF 12201, Syslog 5140, Beats 5044 and Raw 5555 are public endpoints, so open only the ports you use in your own firewall and restrict them to your log sources. The web interface needs the admin login.

Why does the first start take a few minutes?

The first start runs database migrations and boots the bundled search engine, so allow 3 to 5 minutes before the address answers.

Does the search engine need a server setting?

Yes. It needs vm.max_map_count of at least 262144 on the server, set before installing.

What should I back up?

The graylog_data, datanode_data, mongodb_data and mongodb_config volumes together, plus GRAYLOG_PASSWORD_SECRET. Stop the stack first for a filesystem copy.

Backups in xCloud

Why must GRAYLOG_PASSWORD_SECRET never change?

It encrypts and signs data stored in the database. Changing it after the first start breaks stored credentials and sessions, so keep it safe and with your backups.

What survives a restart?

Inputs, indexed messages and configuration. They live on the four named volumes and were still present after an xCloud Restart in QA.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update Graylog?

No. The template pins Graylog 7.1.9 by immutable digest; new installations use the pinned release and existing sites are not automatically upgraded. Back up first, read the upstream release notes, then bump the readable tag and digest together on your own schedule. Server-level backups and snapshots are available on every Cloud VPS.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template's baseline asks for 2 CPU cores, 3072 MB of RAM and 20 GB of disk; measured use in QA was about 3.3 GiB with all three services running. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, which leaves headroom above that.

Can I offer Graylog to others as a service?

Graylog Open is licensed under the SSPL. Running it for your own logs is fine; offering Graylog itself to third parties as a service triggers SSPL section 13 obligations.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Graylog?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Graylog project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Graylog project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
