What is Invoice Builder?

Invoice Builder is an open-source app for creating and managing invoices and quotations. It is aimed at freelancers and small businesses, and stores its data in SQLite database files that you create from its start screen.

Besides the documents themselves it manages the records behind them: businesses, clients, banks, items, categories, units and currencies. Invoices can be exported as PDF or as e-invoice XML.

From Sign-Up to a Live Invoicing App In Just 3 Easy Steps

An Invoice Builder setup normally means a container, a data volume, a login gate in front of an app that has no accounts, a domain and a certificate before the first invoice. This is the same result without assembling any of it.

  1. Step 01

Create your xCloud account and pick Invoice Builder from the OneClick catalog. Choose your domain and target server, then enter the Admin Username (default admin).

  2. Step 02

    We Deploy It For You

One click. We bring up the pinned Invoice Builder image and a small Caddy gateway that enforces HTTP Basic Authentication, mount the invoice_builder_data volume at /app-data for your SQLite files, generate the password and publish it over HTTPS on your domain.

  3. Step 03

    Create Your First Database

Open your HTTPS URL and sign in with the Basic username and generated password. From the start screen create a new SQLite database, then add your business and your first client.

Everything Invoice Builder Does, On Your Own Server

Invoice Builder runs in full here: invoices, quotes and the records behind them, with your data on a volume you own.

  • Invoices And Quotes With PDF Preview

Create and manage invoices and quotations with a live PDF preview in A4 or Letter format.

  • E-Invoice Export

Export invoices as UBL 2.1 / Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 or XRechnung XML.

  • Clients, Items And Banks

Manage businesses, clients, banks, items, categories, units and currencies, with XLSX import and export.

  • Tax, Discounts And Partial Payments

Handle surcharges, discounts, shipping, inclusive or exclusive tax and partial payments on a document.

  • A Password Gate In Front

The app has no accounts, so a Caddy gateway puts HTTP Basic Authentication in front of the whole interface and API; requests without credentials get 401.

  • Built-In Database Backup And Restore

The app offers its own database backup and restore, alongside the persistent volume that holds the SQLite files.

Everything You Need To Run Your Invoicing 24/7

Managed hosting for Invoice Builder, so the parts that keep it online are not your problem.

  • Login password generated for you
  • Kept behind xCloud nginx
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Server backups and snapshots
  • Server security updates included

What You Can Do With Invoice Builder

  • Send invoices from your own server

Create and manage invoices with a live PDF preview in A4 or Letter format, without putting client records into a hosted invoicing service.

  • Quote first, invoice later

Keep quotations alongside invoices in the same app, using the same clients, items and tax settings.

  • E-invoicing for EU clients

Export invoices as UBL 2.1 / Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 or XRechnung XML for customers that expect an electronic invoice rather than a PDF.

  • Move data in and out of spreadsheets

Import and export clients, items and other records as XLSX when you are migrating from a spreadsheet or reporting elsewhere.

  • One invoice workspace from several machines

Reach the same invoice data from a laptop, a desktop or a client site through the browser.

Invoice Builder vs Alternatives

Invoice Ninja
A larger self-hosted invoicing platform with recurring billing, payments and expenses; Invoice Builder is a smaller app centred on invoices, quotes and e-invoice export.
InvoiceShelf
An open-source invoicing app covering customers, estimates, expenses and payments; Invoice Builder is narrower, with invoices, quotes and e-invoice export and no accounts of its own.
FreshBooks
A hosted accounting and invoicing service you subscribe to; with Invoice Builder the invoice data lives on a server you control.
Wave
A hosted invoicing and accounting service; Invoice Builder is software you run yourself, with no third-party account holding your records.

Hear what people are saying about us

See why agencies, developers, startups, and growing businesses choose xCloud to power their projects.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!
Brian Geovanny
I've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.

I'm moving my servers to xCloud, a cloud control panel by M Asif Rahman and the WPDeveloper team. Their roadmap looks interesting and no, there are no team mates nor API limits with xCloud! #xCloud #wordpress #hosting

xCloud is like having an expert server team on call — without the big agency costs. It's given me back my time and given my clients peace of mind. Highly recommended for freelancers and small teams who want reliable performance and security.

xCloud isn't just a solution. It's like one of that friend who got your back when you screw things up pretty bad.

Trust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍

So far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.

Came from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.
Gerson El
I've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony Lewis
I came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowell
I like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose

Dear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

How do I sign in?

Use the HTTP Basic username you chose at install and the generated password from the installation credentials card. Your browser asks for them before the app loads.

Does Invoice Builder have user accounts?

No. Access is controlled by the gateway, so everyone who has the credentials has full access to all invoice data. Share them only with people you trust, and change them in the environment settings with Save & Redeploy.

What runs alongside the app?

A small Caddy gateway that enforces the login. The Invoice Builder container has no published port and is reachable only from the gateway inside the Docker network.

Where is my invoice data stored?

In SQLite database files on the invoice_builder_data volume, mounted at /app-data. You create the first database from the start screen after signing in.

Can it use PostgreSQL?

Upstream supports an external PostgreSQL server chosen on the start screen. The template's default is SQLite files on the volume, and no PostgreSQL server is included.

What should I back up?

The invoice_builder_data volume and your stable .env values. The app also offers its own database backup and restore.

What survives a restart?

Data on the invoice_builder_data volume. In the verify run a client created in the app was still there after a container restart.

Why does a database sometimes show an access error in another tab?

Upstream keeps a browser workspace id in the tab's session storage, so a database created in one tab can show an access error in another until the old session expires. Reopen it from the same browser session.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update Invoice Builder?

No. The template pins Invoice Builder 3.1.2 by immutable digest; new installations use the pinned release and existing sites are not automatically upgraded. Back up first, read the upstream release notes, then bump the readable tag and digest together on your own schedule. Server-level backups and snapshots are available on every Cloud VPS.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template's baseline asks for 1 CPU core, 64 MB of RAM and 1 GB of disk; measured use in QA was about 42 MiB idle and about 49 MiB after creating data. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung of the OneClick plans, which leaves large headroom above that baseline.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Invoice Builder?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Invoice Builder project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Invoice Builder project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
