What is Norish?

Norish is an open-source, real-time recipe app, described upstream as household-first, for planning meals, sharing groceries and cooking together. It supports email and password accounts, shared recipe organisation, image uploads and recipe imports from public URLs. A self-hosted Norish is a household recipe collection that replaces scattered bookmarks and screenshots. It is licensed AGPL-3.0, and upstream marks the project as a beta release.

On xCloud it is Norish 0.21.0-beta, pinned by digest, beside Obscura for browser-based URL imports, PostgreSQL 17 and Redis 8.10.1, all private to the install. The norish_uploads, norish_postgres_data and norish_redis_data volumes hold images, accounts and recipes, and real-time job state. xCloud generates the master key and database credentials, and the first account you create becomes the administrator.

How much RAM does Norish need?

Norish asks for 2048 MB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 10 GB of disk in the template, because four services run: Norish, Obscura, PostgreSQL and Redis. The 6 GB plan clears that floor and leaves room for uploads and a growing recipe collection.

Can you self-host Norish with Docker?

Yes, and this template is norish docker hosting without the setup: the Norish image pinned by digest, Obscura, PostgreSQL 17 and Redis with AOF persistence on a private network, three named volumes, a generated master key and HTTPS on your own domain.

Can Norish import recipes from a website?

Yes. Norish imports recipes from public URLs, and its Obscura service renders the page in an isolated browser for the import. Obscura publishes no host port, so its browser-control endpoint stays private to the install.

Is Norish a stable release?

No. Upstream marks this release, 0.21.0-beta, as a beta, so review the release notes and validate your backups before you rely on it for production use. The install stays on that pinned release until you adopt a newer template.

Who becomes the administrator in Norish?

The first account created through Norish's own sign-up becomes the server owner and administrator, and public registration then closes automatically. xCloud generates no admin password, so create that account yourself right after the install.

Does Norish support OIDC, GitHub or Google sign-in?

Norish has optional OIDC, GitHub, Google, AI and transcription integrations, but the template leaves them unconfigured so incomplete credentials cannot break first boot. Set them up later from Settings and Admin after reading the release documentation.

Is Norish free?

Yes. Norish is open source under the GNU AGPL v3 licence, so the software has no licence fee. Only the Cloud VPS costs money here, and this Norish cloud install is yours to run.

How do I back up Norish?

Back up norish_uploads, norish_postgres_data and norish_redis_data together as one boundary, since a database-only copy is not complete. Stop the application services before a filesystem snapshot, keep MASTER_KEY private and test a restore.

How do I upgrade Norish?

The install stays on its pinned 0.21.0-beta image until you adopt a newer template version. First back up all three volumes, keep MASTER_KEY unchanged and read the upstream release notes. No upgrade happens by itself, and the named volumes must never be deleted during one.

What happens if I change the Norish master key?

Previously encrypted values become unreadable. MASTER_KEY derives the encryption keys for stored secrets, so keep it stable and private. It is separate from the database password, which you rotate inside PostgreSQL first.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
