What is RStudio Server?

RStudio Server is a browser-based integrated development environment for R, and rocker/rstudio is the Rocker project's versioned image with RStudio Server already installed on top of rocker/r-ver. It sits in a stack alongside rocker/tidyverse, rocker/verse and rocker/geospatial, which add packages. A self-hosted RStudio Server gives you an R development environment in the browser, in place of hosted RStudio services. The Rocker build files are GPL-2.0 licensed, and RStudio Server carries its own terms.

On xCloud it is Rocker RStudio 4.6.1, the official image pinned by digest, with authentication kept on and no sudo for the rstudio user. The rstudio_home volume holds /home/rstudio, with projects, user settings and user-installed R libraries. System packages installed into the container itself are recreated from the pinned image on redeploy.

How much RAM does RStudio Server need?

The minimum in the template is 4096 MB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 10 GB of disk. This page sells the 16 GB plan for larger datasets and models.

Can you self-host RStudio Server with Docker?

Yes, and this template is rstudio server docker hosting without the setup: the official rocker/rstudio image pinned by digest, the rstudio_home volume, a generated password and HTTPS on your own domain, with authentication switched on.

What username does RStudio Server use?

Sign in as rstudio with the generated password from your credentials. The Rocker image uses that non-root user by default. The template keeps authentication on and does not give the user sudo access.

How do I change the RStudio Server password?

Update PASSWORD in the Environment editor and restart the app, because Rocker reapplies it to the rstudio account at startup. Changing the Linux password only inside the container would be overwritten at the next start.

Do R packages persist in RStudio Server?

User-installed R libraries in your home directory persist in the rstudio_home volume. System packages installed into the container filesystem do not, because they are recreated from the pinned image on redeploy.

Can I upload large datasets through the RStudio Files pane?

Only up to the proxy cap of 100 MB per request. R scripts and small datasets fit, but larger CSV, RDS or model files can be rejected before they reach RStudio, so copy big files onto the server another way.

Is RStudio Server free?

The Rocker build files are GPL-2.0 licensed and there is no software fee from xCloud, but RStudio Server has its own licence terms, so check them for your use. You pay for the Cloud VPS, making this an RStudio Server cloud install of your own.

How do I back up RStudio Server?

Back up the rstudio_home volume, which holds /home/rstudio with projects, settings and user-installed libraries, before upgrades or destructive changes. Keep PASSWORD with the backup so the account you restore can be signed in to.

How do I upgrade RStudio Server?

RStudio Server stays on its pinned 4.6.1 image until a newer template version is adopted. Back up the rstudio_home volume beforehand and review the Rocker release notes. Rolling back means restoring that backup with the previous template version, since newer user-library state cannot always be downgraded.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
