What is FileGator?

FileGator is a free, open-source, self-hosted web application for managing files and folders. It supports multiple users with roles, permissions and home folders, and the usual operations: copy, move, rename, edit, preview, zip, unzip, upload and download. Uploads are chunked and can be paused and resumed. Run on your own server it is a self-hosted FileGator, an alternative to a hosted storage service such as Dropbox or Box, with the code under the MIT licence.

Can I run FileGator in Docker?

Yes, and this template is FileGator Docker hosting without the setup: the upstream filegator/filegator v7.16.4 multi-architecture image pinned by digest, with two named volumes, your administrator account, loopback-only app port and HTTPS on your own domain.

How much RAM does FileGator need?

The catalog baseline is 512 MB of RAM, one CPU core and 2 GB of disk. Storage needs depend mainly on uploaded files, archives and how many people use it at once. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung.

How do I sign in to FileGator after installing?

Open your URL and sign in with the administrator username and password you set at install, shown in the credentials. Then upload a file, create folders or add restricted users from the Users page, checking each home folder.

Does FileGator have a default admin password?

Upstream ships a documented default administrator, but this template replaces it on the first start with the credentials you chose, before the app is reachable. The default never serves live traffic. Later edits to the environment values do not rotate the login.

How do I add users to FileGator?

Open the Users page as the administrator and create each user with a role, a password, a home folder and permissions. Review each home directory and permission before sharing access. There is no public sign-up.

Can FileGator use S3 or FTP storage?

FileGator supports other storage adapters, but this template preconfigures only local storage on the two volumes. Connecting S3, FTP or another adapter is application-side configuration you do yourself, and it is not set up for you.

Is FileGator free?

Yes. FileGator is free and open source under the MIT licence, so the software has no licence fee and no per-user charge. You are billed for the dedicated Cloud VPS that stores your uploads and serves the interface. That makes it a FileGator cloud of your own.

How do I back up FileGator?

Back up both volumes together: filegator_repository holds your uploaded files and filegator_private holds users, password hashes, configuration, sessions and logs. Restore them as a pair. Nothing schedules the copy, so run it yourself and keep a copy off the server.

How do I upgrade FileGator?

The install stays on its pinned v7.16.4 image until you adopt a newer template version. Back up both volumes first, read the upstream release notes, then check administrator login, permissions, uploads and downloads afterwards. Existing sites are never upgraded automatically.

How do I change the administrator password?

Sign in to FileGator, open Users, edit the administrator, save the new password and verify a fresh login before discarding the old one. The install values initialise only once, so editing the environment later does not rotate the login.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
