What is Nextcloud?

Nextcloud is an open-source platform for storing, syncing and sharing your files, contacts and calendars on a server of your choosing. Run on your own server it is self-hosted Nextcloud: a private alternative to Google Drive or Dropbox, kept in sync across desktop and mobile clients and extended with apps such as Calendar, Contacts, Mail and Video Chat from its App Store. The server code is licensed under the AGPL.

Yes, and Nextcloud Docker hosting on xCloud means the application and its database run in containers on an NGINX server you create. You pick Nextcloud in One Click Apps, enter the domain and admin details, and xCloud provisions it.

How much RAM does Nextcloud need?

xCloud's Nextcloud docs state no memory minimum and no Nextcloud manifest exists to quote. The nearest tracked template, ownCloud, declares 2048 MB, so this page sells the 6 GB tier. Plan more RAM and disk as users, files and apps grow.

How do I set up Nextcloud on my own server?

Do I need a Docker server to run Nextcloud?

Is Nextcloud free?

Yes. Nextcloud server is open source, so the software costs nothing to run. What you rent from xCloud is the server, and you can resize it later. Nextcloud GmbH also sells Nextcloud Enterprise separately, which this deployment does not include.

What apps and clients work with Nextcloud?

Upstream lists desktop clients for Windows, macOS and Linux and Android and iOS apps. On the server side you can add apps such as Calendar, Contacts, Mail and Video Chat from the Nextcloud App Store, installed on your own instance.

How do I sign in after deployment?

Open your site's URL from the xCloud dashboard with Visit Site and sign in with the admin username and password you set during setup, or the defaults you left in place. The admin email you enter is the one tied to that account.

How do I back up Nextcloud?

Nextcloud's application and database run in containers on Docker volumes, so back up those volumes together, taken at the same moment. We could not source the exact volume names, so list them on your server first, then follow the Docker backup guide.

How do I upgrade Nextcloud?

Treat upgrades as your own decision: nothing on this page promises automatic Nextcloud upgrades. Back up the volumes and the database first, read Nextcloud's release notes for the version you are moving to, and test the change before you rely on it.

Can I limit Nextcloud to a VPN?

xCloud has a guide for restricting Nextcloud access to a WireGuard VPN behind Cloudflare, so the login page is not open to the whole internet. It is a manual setup you perform on your own server, separate from the one-click deployment.

Is this a Nextcloud cloud I can resize?

It is Nextcloud on a dedicated Cloud VPS you can resize, so it works as your own Nextcloud cloud with its own domain and SSL certificate. More users, files and apps mean more RAM and disk, which you add by changing the plan.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
