What is MeTube?

Self-hosted MeTube is a web UI for yt-dlp, for downloading media from YouTube and dozens of other sites. Its README lists downloading videos, audio, captions and thumbnails from a browser UI, downloading playlists and channels with configurable output options, and subscribing to channels and playlists so new uploads are queued automatically. It runs on your own server in place of an online video downloader site, under the AGPL-3.0 licence.

On xCloud the template runs the pinned MeTube 2026.09.20 image behind a Caddy Basic Authentication gateway, pinned by immutable digest, with a metube_downloads volume. HTTPS is published on your domain. MeTube has no login of its own, so the gateway protects the interface, the WebSocket, the API and the download links, and some sites block datacenter addresses.

How much RAM does MeTube need?

The manifest asks for 1 CPU core, 1024 MB of RAM and 20 GB of disk as a floor. The 6 GB tier sold here leaves real headroom, and the downloads volume is what grows the disk, so keep an eye on free space.

Is MeTube free and open source?

Yes. MeTube carries the AGPL-3.0 licence, per the LICENSE file at the 2026.09.20 tag, so the software costs nothing to license; xCloud's bill is the dedicated Cloud VPS, and your downloads stay on your own volume.

Can you run MeTube with Docker?

What is the difference between MeTube and HomeTube?

Both are self-hosted web UIs for yt-dlp. MeTube's README stresses playlists, channels and subscriptions, while HomeTube emphasises quality profiles and media-server-ready output. HomeTube has its own xCloud page, so compare the two against how you organise and watch your downloads.

Does MeTube have its own login?

No. The template adds a pinned Caddy container that enforces HTTP Basic Authentication on the entire interface, the WebSocket connection, the API and the download links. The username and password come from install; rotate them in the Environment editor and restart.

Why do some sites refuse to download in MeTube?

Some sites rate-limit or block datacenter IP addresses; that is a site-side restriction, not a template fault. The server also needs outbound HTTPS access to the sites you download from, so test with a site you know works first.

Does deleting from the MeTube list delete the file?

By default the trash action only removes the entry and keeps the file. Set DELETE_FILE_ON_TRASHCAN to true in the Environment editor if you want it to delete the file too. Keep an eye on free disk space either way.

Can I download anything with MeTube?

You are responsible for complying with the terms of the sites you download from and with copyright law. MeTube does not check this for you. Test the setup with a public-domain or Creative Commons clip, and only fetch content you are permitted to.

What should I back up on a MeTube server?

The metube_downloads volume, which holds the downloaded media files and the queue and history state under .metube. Keep the login private, copy the volume off the server if the files matter, and test a restore of the queue state.

How do I upgrade MeTube?

Nothing upgrades itself: the install stays on pinned release 2026.09.20 until you adopt a newer template version. Back up the downloads volume first, read the upstream release notes, then check sign-in and run one test download.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
