What is ownCloud?

ownCloud Core is the server-side component of ownCloud Classic. Its README describes file storage, synchronization and sharing, with WebDAV, CalDAV and CardDAV servers, a plugin architecture for apps and user and group management. Self-hosted ownCloud means that file sync and sharing server runs on your own machine, as a self-hosted alternative to a hosted service such as Dropbox. It is licensed under AGPL-3.0.

Is ownCloud free?

Yes. The ownCloud Classic Community Server this template deploys is free software under AGPL-3.0, with the COPYING file linked from this page at the pinned v11.0.0 tag. xCloud's invoice covers the Cloud VPS only, not ownCloud, and enterprise-only features and commercial support are not included.

Can you run ownCloud with Docker?

Yes, and this ownCloud Docker hosting template does it for you: the official owncloud/server image with a private MariaDB and Redis, all pinned by digest, runs under Docker Compose on your own server rather than an ownCloud cloud account. Only ownCloud's port 8080 is proxied over HTTPS.

How much RAM does ownCloud need?

The floor in the manifest is 2 CPU cores, 2048 MB of RAM and 10 GB of disk, covering ownCloud, MariaDB and Redis together. A growing team's files, shares and users need more over time, especially disk. This page sells the 6 GB tier, which leaves ample headroom.

Does ownCloud support WebDAV?

No. This template ships ownCloud Classic Community Server 11.0.0. Upstream's README points to ownCloud Infinite Scale, oCIS, as its next-generation platform, which is a different product with a different architecture. Infinite Scale is not part of this install, and neither are enterprise-only features.

How do I reset the ownCloud admin password?

The generated password only initialises the account on first startup, so editing the environment value later does not rotate it. Run occ user:resetpassword with the admin username against the running owncloud container. xCloud generates an ocadmin_ username with a random suffix and a 32-character password.

How do I back up ownCloud?

Take one backup of the owncloud_files and owncloud_db volumes from the same recovery point: files hold uploaded data and configuration, MariaDB holds users, metadata and shares. Retain owncloud_redis too, put the site in maintenance mode for a coordinated backup, and test a restore.

How do I upgrade ownCloud?

Upgrades are not automatic. The template pins ownCloud, MariaDB and Redis by immutable digest, and a catalog re-sync leaves existing installs alone. Read ownCloud's and MariaDB's upgrade notes, back up the volumes together and test a restore, then choose a later template version and verify sign-in and file read-back.

What runs alongside ownCloud?

A private MariaDB 10.11 database with generated credentials and a private Redis 7.4 cache used for file locking. Only ownCloud itself is published, over HTTPS; MariaDB and Redis publish no ports. xCloud also sets the trusted-domain and CLI URL settings for your domain.

How do I sign in the first time?

Use the generated administrator username and 32-character password shown in the credentials panel next to the ownCloud URL. Then create users and groups, upload a file, and set sharing policies from the administration settings. Change the administrator password afterwards with the occ command.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
