Seafile Hosting Live In 5 Minutes

Seafile hosting gives a team or family private file sync and sharing, organised around libraries, on a server you own. Deploy Seafile CE 12.0.14 as a self-hosted file sync and sharing server: xCloud runs the pinned image with a private MariaDB database and a memcached cache, generates the administrator password, mounts persistent storage and publishes it over HTTPS, so there is no third-party storage account.

What is Seafile?

Self-hosted Seafile is a file sync and sharing server. Its README calls it an open source cloud storage system focused on privacy and teamwork: collections of files are libraries, each synced separately and optionally encrypted with a password you choose, and users can create groups and share files into them. Teams run it as an alternative to Dropbox or Google Drive when they want the files on their own server.

On xCloud the template runs Seafile Community Edition 12.0.14 beside a private MariaDB 10.11.19 database and memcached, all pinned by immutable digest. The seafile_data and seafile_db volumes persist libraries and metadata. HTTPS is published on your domain, a generated administrator password replaces upstream defaults, open signup is off, and Seadoc is not included. The server core is AGPLv3.

From Sign-Up to a Live Seafile Server In Just 3 Easy Steps

Self-hosting Seafile normally means a container, a private database, a generated admin password, a domain and a certificate before a single file is synced. This is the same result without assembling any of it.

  1. Step 01

Create your xCloud account and pick Seafile from the OneClick catalog. Enter an administrator email and choose a domain.

  2. Step 02

    We Deploy It For You

One click. We bring up the pinned Seafile CE image alongside a private MariaDB database and memcached cache, create the administrator account with a generated 32-character password, and publish Seafile over HTTPS on your domain.

  3. Step 03

Sign In And Create A Library

Wait a few minutes for first boot to finish, then open your HTTPS URL and sign in. Create your first library and upload a file, or connect a desktop or mobile client to the same address.

Everything Seafile Does, On Your Own Server

Seafile runs in full here — libraries, sync and sharing, on infrastructure you control.

  • Library-Based Organization

Organize files into libraries with web upload and download, rather than one undifferentiated folder tree.

  • Public Share Links

Share individual files or whole libraries through Seafile's own link controls, not a third-party storage account.

  • One Address For Every Client

The same HTTPS address serves the web interface and is the address you enter in the desktop and mobile Seafile clients.

  • WebDAV Support

Enable WebDAV at /seafdav/ from Seafile's own settings when you need to mount storage from tools that speak that protocol.

  • Closed Signup, Admin-Defined

Open signup is off from the first boot; the only account that exists is the administrator you define at install.

  • Your Files, Your Server

Libraries, configuration and the database all stay on a server you control instead of a third-party storage account.

Everything You Need To Run Your File Sync 24/7

Managed hosting for Seafile, so the parts that keep it online are not your problem.

  • Seafile CE deployed instantly
  • Generated administrator password
  • Private MariaDB database
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Server backups and snapshots
  • Server security updates included
  • 30+ server locations
  • Unused balance refunded

What You Can Do With Seafile

  • Share a team's files from your own server

Create libraries for projects, add colleagues through groups and send share links, with every file held on a Cloud VPS you control instead of a third-party storage account.

  • Keep sensitive folders encrypted

Encrypt a library with a password you choose, per the README, so a folder of contracts or records is protected separately from the rest of the server.

  • Sync only the libraries you need

Because each library syncs separately, a laptop can pull one project's library without downloading everything else the team stores on the server.

  • Mount storage over WebDAV

Turn on WebDAV at /seafdav/ from Seafile's own settings when a tool or operating system needs to mount your libraries as a network drive.

Seafile vs Alternatives

Dropbox
Choose Seafile as a Dropbox alternative when you want files on your own server. Seafile's README describes an open source cloud storage system with libraries and group sharing, here under AGPLv3 for the core.
Google Drive
As a Google Drive alternative, Seafile keeps libraries, metadata and configuration on volumes of a server you control, with a generated administrator account.
Nextcloud
Nextcloud has its own xCloud template. Seafile is organised around libraries that sync separately, per its README, so compare on that model.
OpenCloud
OpenCloud has its own xCloud template. Seafile here uses MariaDB and memcached beside the server, with libraries and metadata on two volumes.

See why agencies, developers, startups, and growing businesses choose xCloud to power their projects.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!
Brian Geovanny
I've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.

I'm moving my servers to xCloud, a cloud control panel by M Asif Rahman and the WPDeveloper team. Their roadmap looks interesting and no, there are no team mates nor API limits with xCloud! #xCloud #wordpress #hosting

xCloud is like having an expert server team on call — without the big agency costs. It's given me back my time and given my clients peace of mind. Highly recommended for freelancers and small teams who want reliable performance and security.

xCloud isn't just a solution. It's like one of that friend who got your back when you screw things up pretty bad.

Trust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍

So far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.

Came from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.
Gerson El
I've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony Lewis
I came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowell
I like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose

Dear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

How much RAM does Seafile need?

Seafile, MariaDB and memcached together need a floor of 2 CPU cores, 2048 MB of RAM and 10 GB of disk, per the manifest. The 6 GB Cloud VPS on this page gives plenty of room above that, while its 100 GB disk caps how much you can store.

Is Seafile free and open source?

Yes. The template lists the Community Edition server stack as AGPL-3.0 with an OpenSSL exception, matching the LICENSE at the v12.0.14-server tag, and the README notes other Seafile components carry their own licences. xCloud charges for the Cloud VPS, not the software.

Can you run Seafile with Docker?

Yes, and this is Seafile Docker hosting prepared for you: the template runs seafileltd/seafile-mc 12.0.14 beside MariaDB 10.11.19 and memcached 1.6.29, all pinned by immutable digest, with seafile_data and seafile_db volumes and HTTPS on your domain.

Can Seafile encrypt a library?

Yes. Its README says collections of files are called libraries, each library can be synced separately, and a library can be encrypted with a password you choose. Treat that password carefully, because encryption is applied per library rather than to the whole server.

Do the Seafile desktop and mobile clients work with a self-hosted server?

They connect to the same HTTPS address as the web interface, and WebDAV can be enabled at /seafdav/ from Seafile's own settings. The README says the server core provides HTTP APIs to the desktop clients for syncing, but client behaviour was not tested in QA for this template.

Can anyone register on my Seafile server?

No. Open signup is off from the first boot, and the only account is the administrator you define at install. Sign in with that email and the generated 32-character password from your installation credentials; upstream default credentials are never used.

Does Seafile send email out of the box?

No. SMTP is set in seahub_settings.py inside the data volume, not through environment variables, and the template does not configure it. Until you add it, invitations and password-reset messages will not be delivered, so plan to edit that file after the first sign-in.

What should I back up on a Seafile server?

A backup needs the seafile_data volume and the seafile_db volume together, taken at the same recovery point, because libraries and their metadata depend on both. Test a restore before you need one, and keep the generated passwords and JWT key with it.

How do I upgrade Seafile?

Nothing upgrades it for you: the image is pinned at 12.0.14 by immutable digest. Take a verified backup of both volumes, read the Seafile 12.0 upgrade notes, then adopt a newer template version when one is published, and confirm sign-in works afterwards.

How large a file can I upload to Seafile?

Web uploads through the proxy accept bodies up to 50 GiB, matching the template's own configuration, and storage is limited by your Cloud VPS disk. Very large uploads are better done with the sync clients than through a browser tab on a slow connection.

Is this Seafile cloud hosting?

It is your own Seafile on a dedicated Cloud VPS that xCloud provisions, not a shared storage service. The private MariaDB database, both volumes and the administrator account belong to your install, and Seadoc is not included in this Community Edition setup.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.

Ready to Own Your File Storage?

Connect your first server in minutes. No plan you have to grow into.
