What is PairDrop?

PairDrop is a local file sharing app that runs in your web browser. Upstream describes it as inspired by Apple's AirDrop and a fork of Snapdrop: you send images, documents or text peer-to-peer to devices on the same network, join temporary public rooms to transfer over the internet, or pair devices permanently with a code or QR. It works on all devices with a modern browser and installs as a Progressive Web App. A self-hosted PairDrop puts the signalling page on your own domain, and the code is GPL-3.0.

Transfers are WebRTC between browsers, so file bytes never rest on the server, and pairings live in browser storage. Is PairDrop free?

Yes. PairDrop is open source under GPL-3.0, so there is no licence fee. Your only cost is the Cloud VPS. Because file bytes pass between browsers rather than through the server, transfer volume does not load it the way an upload service would.

How much RAM does PairDrop need?

The floor is 512 MB of RAM with one core and 2 GB of disk, mostly for the Node signalling process. The 6 GB plan is far above that, which leaves the same server free for other apps such as a file upload service.

Can you self-host PairDrop with Docker?

Yes, and this template is PairDrop Docker hosting without the proxy fiddling: the ghcr.io/schlagmichdoch/pairdrop v1.11.2 image pinned by digest on port 3000 behind HTTPS, with forwarding headers set so visitors are not mistaken for one local network.

Does PairDrop store my files on the server?

No. Transferred files flow between the two browsers and are not retained. Paired-device secrets, display names and preferences live in each browser's storage, and temporary room membership ends when the browser leaves, so the server holds no copy to leak.

Why does PairDrop not connect between different networks?

Direct WebRTC depends on both peers being reachable. Upstream notes that restrictive or different networks may need a TURN service, which this template does not deploy, and WebSocket fallback is switched off because it would route file data through your server.

What is the difference between PairDrop and Snapdrop?

PairDrop is a fork of Snapdrop. Upstream lists its differences, and the ones that matter here are temporary public rooms and permanent device pairing for internet transfers. Both run in the browser and transfer peer to peer.

Is there a login on PairDrop?

No. PairDrop has no accounts or administrator login, so anyone who reaches the domain can open the page. If the page should not be public, restrict it with xCloud Basic Authentication or IP management, which puts a prompt in front of the whole page.

How do I back up PairDrop?

There is nothing on the server to back up, because the template has no database or volume. Keep the original files or your downloaded copies. Clearing a browser's storage removes its device pairings and preferences.

How do I upgrade PairDrop?

The install stays on PairDrop v1.11.2 until you adopt a newer template version. With no volume to copy, read the upstream release notes first. Nothing upgrades the app automatically, and a redeploy restores service straight away.

Is there a PairDrop cloud service I can use?

This page is your own PairDrop cloud: a dedicated Cloud VPS running the open-source signalling server on your domain. Rooms and pairings run through your own server and domain instead of a shared public instance.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
