What is DumbDrop?

DumbDrop is a stupid simple file upload application with a clean, modern interface for dragging and dropping files, released under GPL-3.0. Upstream lists drag and drop uploads, multiple file selection, directory upload that keeps structure, a dark mode, optional PIN protection, configurable file size limits, extension filtering, Apprise notifications and an optional file listing with download and delete. Self-hosted DumbDrop is the option for people who would otherwise send files through a hosted service such as WeTransfer.

What is DumbDrop used for?

DumbDrop is used to collect files quickly. You give someone the address and the PIN, they drag files or a folder onto the page, and the files land in an uploads folder on your server. There are no accounts and no folders to manage, which suits ad-hoc transfers.

Is DumbDrop free and open source?

Yes. DumbDrop is open source under GPL-3.0, so there is no licence fee for the drop box. xCloud bills for the Cloud VPS and the deployment work. Stored uploads use the server's disk, which is the cost to plan for.

Can you self-host DumbDrop with Docker?

Yes. For DumbDrop Docker hosting the template runs the dumbwareio/dumbdrop image pinned to commit ff8f813 by digest, as one container with a single named volume and HTTPS on your domain. It restricts allowed browser origins and sets the public base URL for you, so cross-origin upload requests are refused.

How much RAM does DumbDrop need?

DumbDrop's manifest floor is 256 MB of RAM, one core and 5 GB of disk. The 6 GB plan sold here is well above that. Disk is what grows: every upload is kept on the server until you delete it, so size the disk for the files you expect.

What is the DumbDrop upload size limit?

The per-file limit is DumbDrop's own MAX_FILE_SIZE setting, in megabytes, which you can change in the Environment editor. DumbDrop streams uploads in 1 MB chunks, so the platform proxy's request body limit does not cap the file size. A proxy such as Cloudflare in front of your domain can still impose its own limit.

Does DumbDrop have user accounts?

No. There are no accounts or per-person folders. A single shared PIN of four to ten digits unlocks uploads for every visitor and is the only access control, so give it only to people you trust. Without a PIN the page would be open to anyone who finds the address.

How do I set the DumbDrop PIN?

You enter it at install: digits only, four to ten of them. To change it, edit DUMBDROP_PIN in the Environment editor and choose Save & Redeploy. Other supported values, such as the page title and allowed extensions, are set the same way. Pick a random PIN instead of a date.

How do I back up DumbDrop?

Back up the dumbdrop_uploads volume, which holds every uploaded file under /app/uploads. Take the copy while uploads are paused, keep it off-server and test a restore separately. Do not delete the volume during a restart or redeploy. Large collections of uploads can make the backup big.

How do I upgrade DumbDrop?

Upstream publishes no git tags or releases, so the template pins the image for commit ff8f813 by digest and updates are manual. Back up dumbdrop_uploads, review the upstream commit history, test a newer image on a disposable install, then select a later template version.

Can I limit which file types are uploaded?

Yes. Upstream lists extension filtering, which the template exposes as an ALLOWED_EXTENSIONS setting in the Environment editor. Restrict it to the types you expect, and set MAX_FILE_SIZE to a sensible per-file limit. Together these keep the drop box from filling the disk with unwanted content.

Can I run DumbDrop in the cloud on xCloud?

Yes. DumbDrop cloud use puts the uploader on a dedicated Cloud VPS, with your domain and certificate attached. Machines rented elsewhere can be enrolled as self-managed. Check the request limits of any CDN you place in front of the domain, and size the disk for the uploads you will keep.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
