What is Plik?

Plik is a scalable and friendly temporary file upload system, described by upstream as like WeTransfer, self-hosted. A self-hosted Plik gives you a modern web interface, a command line client, configurable expiry with automatic cleanup, OneShot downloads, password-protected uploads and several authentication providers. It uses the MIT licence and is written in Go.

On xCloud the install runs Plik 1.4.2 from the official image, pinned by digest, as a single container. The plik_data volume holds uploaded files under /data/files and the SQLite metadata database at /data/plik.db. Local authentication is forced, anonymous uploads are disabled, and an admin account is created once with a generated password. Each file is limited to 1 GB, each user to 10 GB, each upload to 100 files, and retention to 30 days.

Can you self-host Plik with Docker?

Yes, and this template is Plik Docker hosting without the setup. Upstream publishes a Docker guide; here xCloud runs the official rootgg/plik 1.4.2 image pinned by digest, mounts plik_data, forces local authentication and publishes it over HTTPS on your domain.

How much RAM does Plik need?

The template floor is 1 GB of RAM, one CPU core and 10 GB of disk. The 6 GB plan is the entry rung, and real disk needs depend on the files uploaded and the retention you allow.

How do I change the Plik admin password?

From Plik's account settings. ADMIN_PASSWORD creates the administrator only when the account does not exist; editing it later does not rotate the existing account, and the persisted account survives restarts. Store the new password yourself, since the original stays in the environment.

What are the upload limits in Plik?

The template sets 1 GB per file, 10 GB per user, 100 files per upload and a maximum retention of 30 days. Streaming uploads are disabled so data stays inside the persistent storage boundary, and the limits can be changed in Plik's configuration.

Can anonymous users upload to my Plik server?

No. Local authentication is forced and anonymous uploads are disabled, so only signed-in users can upload. Anyone who has a download link can still download that file until it expires, so share links only with the people who should have them.

Does Plik have a command line client?

Yes. Upstream lists a command line client, ShareX integration and an MCP server among its features. The template does not configure any client for you, so point the client at your HTTPS address and sign in with a Plik account.

What should I back up on a Plik server?

Back up the complete plik_data volume while uploads are stopped. It contains both /data/files and /data/plik.db, which must be restored together under the same Compose project identity before starting Plik. Test a restore before relying on it.

How do I upgrade Plik?

Plik 1.4.2 stays pinned until you move to a newer template version. Stop writes, copy the complete data volume and read the release notes. A running site never upgrades by itself, and rolling back needs the previous image plus its matching backup.

Is Plik free?

Yes. Plik is open source under the MIT licence, so the software has no licence fee at all. Your cost is the dedicated Cloud VPS, including the disk that holds every uploaded file until it expires, which is the part to size.

Is Plik an alternative to WeTransfer?

Upstream describes it as exactly that: a temporary file upload system like WeTransfer, self-hosted. The difference is that files sit on your own server, with limits and retention you control, and uploads need a signed-in account.

Is there a Plik cloud service?

Upstream runs a live demo, which is a different thing. On xCloud your own Plik instead runs on a dedicated Cloud VPS that we provision, keeping files and metadata on a volume you own, with the limits and retention you configure.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
