What is Radicale?

Radicale is a small but powerful CalDAV and CardDAV server. Upstream says it shares calendars and contact lists, supports events, to-dos, journal entries and business cards, works out of the box without complicated setup, limits access by authentication, works with many clients, and stores all data on the file system in a simple folder structure. Self-hosted Radicale replaces a hosted calendar and contacts service, and is GPLv3-licensed free software.

A one-shot init container prepares the volumes and the first account, with the username you choose and a generated password. Can you self-host Radicale with Docker?

Yes. Upstream publishes a Dockerfile and compose file, and this template is Radicale Docker hosting already set up: the 3.8.0 image pinned by digest, two named volumes, a bcrypt first account and HTTPS. It is your own Radicale cloud server for calendars and contacts.

How much RAM does Radicale need?

Radicale declares 512 MB of RAM, 1 core and 2 GB of disk. The 6 GB plan is the entry rung here. Calendars and contacts are small text files, so memory and disk stay modest, and the server can share the Cloud VPS with other apps.

Is Radicale free?

Yes, GPLv3-licensed free software with no fee. The dedicated Cloud VPS is what you pay for, and it can be cancelled whenever you wish. Data stays as plain files on a volume you control, in a folder structure upstream documents.

Which clients work with Radicale?

Upstream says it works with many CalDAV and CardDAV clients. Point any client at your HTTPS Radicale address and sign in with the account you created, on phones, desktops and calendar apps alike. Check each client's CalDAV and CardDAV setup guide for the exact URL form.

Does Radicale support to-do lists and contacts?

Yes. Upstream lists events, to-dos, journal entries and business cards, shared over CalDAV for calendars and to-dos and over CardDAV for contacts. Create the calendar and address-book collections after your first sign-in, then connect your clients to them.

Where does Radicale store its data?

On the file system, in a simple folder structure, which in this template is the radicale_data volume. It holds calendars, contacts, collection properties and sync state. The radicale_config volume separately holds the configuration and the bcrypt credential file.

How do I change the Radicale password?

The running container mounts radicale_config read-only, so run a one-off container from the site directory: docker compose run --rm --entrypoint htpasswd init -B /etc/radicale/users with your username, enter the new password, then update every connected client. Include the changed file in the next backup.

How do I back up Radicale?

Back up radicale_data and radicale_config together while writes are stopped: the first holds calendars, contacts and sync state, and the second holds the configuration and the credential file. Stop the app before copying, and test a restore on a spare install once.

Backups in xCloud

How do I upgrade Radicale?

The install stays on pinned 3.8.0 until you adopt a newer template version. Stop writes, back up both volumes and read the upstream release notes, then check the web UI, CalDAV, CardDAV and owner isolation on a spare restore first. Never remove the volumes.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
