Foxel Hosting Live In 5 Minutes

Deploy Foxel hosting and run a self-hosted private cloud storage app that unifies files across local and remote backends and serves the same tree over the web, WebDAV and S3, on your own domain. xCloud starts the pinned official image with SQLite on a persistent volume. There is no default password: the first visitor to the setup page becomes the super-admin, so open it before you share the address.

What is Foxel?

Foxel is a highly extensible private cloud storage solution for individuals and teams, released under the MIT licence. Upstream lists unified file management across storage backends, adapters for local disk, S3-compatible storage, WebDAV, SFTP, FTP and several cloud drives, built-in preview of images, videos, PDFs and Office documents, role-based access control, and AI-powered semantic search. Self-hosted Foxel is the option for people who would otherwise keep files in a hosted drive such as Dropbox.

On xCloud the template runs ghcr.io/drizzletime/foxel v2.2.2, pinned by digest, as one container with a foxel_data volume holding SQLite, local files, plugins and an optional Milvus Lite database. WebDAV is at /webdav and the S3 API at /s3 on the same HTTPS address. Self-registration is closed after setup, and AI search needs embedding and vector providers that you configure.

From Sign-Up to Your Own File Hub In Just 3 Easy Steps

A self-hosted storage hub normally means a container, signing secrets, a persistent volume, a domain and a certificate before the first upload. This is the same result without assembling any of it.

  1. Step 01

Create your xCloud account and pick Foxel from the OneClick catalog. Choose your domain and target server — there are no extra fields to fill in.

  2. Step 02

    We Deploy It For You

One click. We bring up the official Foxel image as a single container, pinned by immutable digest, mount the foxel_data volume for the database, files and plugins, generate the signing secrets and publish it over HTTPS on your domain.

  3. Step 03

    Open /setup Straight Away

Open the Setup URL from your installation credentials and create the first account — the first visitor becomes the administrator. In the wizard, put the local mount root under data/ (for example data/mount), then add storage adapters, users and roles.

Everything Foxel Does, On Your Own Server

Foxel runs in full here: a unified file manager with WebDAV and S3 access, on a domain and volume you own.

  • Unified File Management

Manage files across local and remote storage backends from one web interface.

  • WebDAV And S3 Access

WebDAV and S3 endpoints are served on the same HTTPS address as the web UI, for desktop and S3-compatible clients.

  • Temporary Share Links

Share files through temporary download links; they are signed with a generated secret that stays with your install.

  • Optional AI Semantic Search

Semantic search becomes available once you configure embedding and vector providers; it is not active until you do.

  • Users, Roles And Adapters

The setup wizard and settings let you add storage adapters, users and roles after the first account is created.

  • Large Uploads Accepted

The xCloud proxy accepts request bodies up to 5 GB. Traffic routed through Cloudflare is limited by Cloudflare's own body-size cap.

What You Can Do With Foxel

  • Browse many storages in one tree

Attach local disk, an S3 bucket, an SFTP server and a cloud drive, and move between them in one interface.

  • Mount your storage as a network drive

Use the WebDAV address from a desktop file manager, or an S3 client, to work with the same files outside the browser.

  • Share files with roles

Create Admin, User and Viewer accounts, or custom roles, so colleagues see only the storage they need.

  • Find files by describing them

Configure an embedding provider and a vector store to search images and documents by what they show.

Foxel vs Alternatives

Dropbox
If your files are in Dropbox, Foxel is the self-hosted route with the added ability to attach Dropbox itself as one storage backend beside local disk and S3.
Nextcloud
Nextcloud has its own xCloud page. Foxel's template is one container with SQLite that serves the same file tree over the web UI, WebDAV and S3, so compare the two for scope and sizing.
Cloudreve
Cloudreve has its own xCloud page and is another self-hosted file platform. Foxel joins local disk and attached backends into one tree with role-based access, so compare the two for sharing and sizing.
Seafile
Seafile has its own xCloud page. Foxel presents several storage backends as one tree and exposes WebDAV and S3 on the same HTTPS address as its web interface.

Hear what people are saying about us

See why agencies, developers, startups, and growing businesses choose xCloud to power their projects.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!
Brian Geovanny
I've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.

I'm moving my servers to xCloud, a cloud control panel by M Asif Rahman and the WPDeveloper team. Their roadmap looks interesting and no, there are no team mates nor API limits with xCloud! #xCloud #wordpress #hosting

xCloud is like having an expert server team on call — without the big agency costs. It's given me back my time and given my clients peace of mind. Highly recommended for freelancers and small teams who want reliable performance and security.

xCloud isn't just a solution. It's like one of that friend who got your back when you screw things up pretty bad.

Trust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍

So far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.

Came from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.
Gerson El
I've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony Lewis
I came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowell
I like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose

Dear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

What is Foxel used for?

Foxel is used to keep files in one place you control. It connects local storage and remote backends, lets people browse, upload, share and preview files in the browser, and exposes the same tree over WebDAV and S3. Optional AI search finds content by description once you configure providers.

Is Foxel free and open source?

Yes. Foxel is open source under the MIT licence, so the software has no licence fee. The xCloud bill covers a dedicated Cloud VPS plus the deployment. Remote storage backends and AI embedding providers you connect are billed by their own providers.

Can you self-host Foxel with Docker?

Yes. For Foxel Docker hosting the template runs the official ghcr.io/drizzletime/foxel image at v2.2.2, pinned by digest, as one container with a single data volume and HTTPS on your domain. It generates the session and temporary-link secrets, and the migrations run before the container listens.

How much RAM does Foxel need?

The manifest floor for Foxel is 512 MB of RAM, one core and 5 GB of disk. The 6 GB plan here has room to spare. Disk use grows with stored files, and enabling in-process vector search and generating embeddings uses extra memory and CPU.

Who becomes the Foxel administrator?

Whoever completes the setup page first. There is no default password; the first visitor to /setup becomes the super-admin. Open your domain's /setup page straight after install and create the account before sharing the URL. After setup, extra self-registration stays closed unless you enable it inside Foxel.

Does Foxel support WebDAV and S3?

Yes. WebDAV is served at /webdav and the S3 API at /s3, both on the same HTTPS address as the web interface. You can mount the tree from a desktop file manager or point an S3 client at it. Browser uploads send each file as one multipart request, and the proxy allows bodies up to 5 GB.

Does Foxel include AI search out of the box?

No. Upstream describes AI-powered semantic search using configurable embedding providers and vector databases, but nothing is configured by the template. You choose a provider and a vector store in the settings, which also costs memory, CPU and possibly provider fees. Until then search matches names.

How do I back up Foxel?

Back up the foxel_data volume. It holds the SQLite database, the default local file mount, plugins and the optional Milvus Lite data. Stop the app before copying so SQLite is consistent. Remote storage backends that you attach are not in that volume and need their own backups.

How do I upgrade Foxel?

Version v2.2.2 is fixed by digest, so a catalog refresh does not move a live file library, and newer upstream tags exist. Back up foxel_data, read the upstream release notes, and select a later template version. After the restart, sign in and open a file from each attached backend.

Can people register themselves?

Not by default. AUTH_ALLOW_REGISTER is false, so extra self-registration stays closed after the first account. Enable it inside Foxel, with a default registration role, only if you want open sign-up. Otherwise the administrator adds users and assigns Admin, User or Viewer roles.

Can I run Foxel in the cloud on xCloud?

Yes. Foxel cloud use places the app on a dedicated Cloud VPS reachable through your domain and a certificate. You can also enrol a server from a different provider as self-managed. Traffic that still passes through Cloudflare is limited by its own request-size cap.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
