What is Heimdall?

Heimdall is an application dashboard for all your web applications. It is not limited to applications, since you can add links to anything, and it works as a browser start page with an optional search bar. Tiles for supported apps can show live stats. Run on your own server it is a self-hosted Heimdall, an alternative to a hosted start page such as Start.me or Netvibes, with the code under the MIT licence and your layout in your own database.

On xCloud it is the LinuxServer.io build of Heimdall v2.8.3, pinned by digest, with a SQLite database in the heimdall_config volume. Heimdall's built-in admin user has no password by default, so the template sets one during the first start before the web server accepts requests, and stops the container rather than serving an open dashboard if that fails. Extra users each get their own dashboard.

Can I run Heimdall in Docker?

Yes, and this template is Heimdall Docker hosting without the setup: the LinuxServer.io Heimdall v2.8.3 image pinned by digest, with a config volume mounted at /config, an admin password set for you and HTTPS on your own domain.

How much RAM does Heimdall need?

The template minimum is 512 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 2 GB of disk. The container runs nginx, PHP-FPM and a small queue worker. The 6 GB tier is our starting size, with margin over those needs.

How do I sign in to Heimdall after installing?

Open your URL and sign in as admin with the password from the credentials. The first start can take a minute while Heimdall prepares its database and downloads its supported-app list. Then add your first application tile.

Is my Heimdall dashboard open to the public?

No by default. Heimdall's admin user ships without a password, so the template sets one before the web server accepts requests. A user's public-front option makes that user's dashboard readable without signing in; leave it off unless you want that.

How do I change the Heimdall admin password?

Change it inside Heimdall: open Users, edit admin, enter the new password twice and save. The install password is applied only once, so editing the HEIMDALL_ADMIN_PASSWORD value in the environment later does not rotate it.

Can I add more users to Heimdall?

Yes. From the Users page you can add users, each with their own dashboard. Editing always needs the password, while the optional public-front setting lets visitors read that one dashboard without signing in. Leave it off for a private start page.

Is Heimdall free?

Yes. Heimdall is open source under the MIT licence, so the software has no fee. The plan you pick pays for the dedicated Cloud VPS that serves your dashboard. That makes it a Heimdall cloud of your own.

How do I back up Heimdall?

Back up the whole heimdall_config volume, which holds the SQLite database, uploaded icons and backgrounds, the application key and the web server config. Stop the site before copying so the database is consistent. Nothing schedules this, so run it yourself.

Backup and restore Docker apps

How do I upgrade Heimdall?

The install stays on its pinned v2.8.3 image until you adopt a newer template version. Back up heimdall_config first and read the Heimdall and LinuxServer release notes. Heimdall migrates its database on start. Nothing upgrades automatically.

Can Heimdall look up private addresses?

No. ALLOW_INTERNAL_REQUESTS is set to false, so Heimdall refuses server-side lookups, such as website lookups or icon URLs, that resolve to private or loopback addresses. That setting suits an internet-facing dashboard, though it means some lookups for private hosts will fail.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
