What is WireMock?

WireMock is an open-source HTTP API mocking server that upstream says helps you create stable test and development environments, isolate yourself from flaky third parties and simulate APIs that do not exist yet. It matches requests on URL, headers and body, supports fault and delay injection, request verification and Handlebars templating, and can run in tests, as a process or as a container. A self-hosted WireMock is an alternative to a hosted API mocking service, released under Apache-2.0.

On xCloud it is WireMock 3.13.2 behind a Caddy 2.11 boundary, both pinned by digest, because WireMock OSS has no administrator login of its own. xCloud generates the credentials and serves it over HTTPS. Mappings persist on wiremock_data once saved, and recording, proxying, webhooks and extensions are not enabled.

Is the WireMock admin API public?

No. WireMock OSS has no administrator login of its own, so Caddy puts the same generated HTTP Basic Auth on every path, including mocks, /__admin and health routes. There is no anonymous endpoint, which makes this a private mock server, not a public one.

How do I create a mock in WireMock?

Send an authenticated POST to /__admin/mappings with a request path and a JSON response, then call the mock on your domain with the same credentials. Runtime mappings are not persisted until you POST to /__admin/mappings/save.

Does WireMock save mappings across restarts?

Only after you save them. Call POST /__admin/mappings/save before backups or lifecycle actions so runtime mappings reach the wiremock_data volume. Request-journal entries and scenario state are transient and are not kept, so they will not survive a restart or a redeploy.

Is this a public mock endpoint?

No, deliberately. Every request needs the Basic Auth credentials, so clients that call your mock must send them. If you need an open mock for outside partners, this template is the wrong shape and needs a separate design.

Can you self-host WireMock with Docker?

Yes. WireMock runs as a standalone process or a container, and this template is WireMock Docker hosting with authentication added: the 3.13.2-3 image and Caddy pinned by digest, a volume and HTTPS on your domain.

How much RAM does WireMock need?

The manifest asks for 1024 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 2 GB of disk. Java starts with a 128 MiB heap and a bounded 512 MiB maximum, and the request journal is capped at 1,000 entries.

Is WireMock open source?

Yes. WireMock and the Caddy boundary are both Apache-2.0, so there is no licence fee. You pay only for the Cloud VPS, which gives you a WireMock cloud of your own rather than a hosted mocking subscription.

How do I change the WireMock credentials?

Update AUTH_USERNAME or AUTH_PASSWORD in the xCloud Environment editor and choose Redeploy. Caddy derives a bcrypt hash at startup, so plaintext is not written to its config. Then update every client and keep the new credentials with your backup.

Does WireMock here support recording or proxying?

Not in this baseline. Upstream lists record and playback of stubs and per-request conditional proxying, but this template does not enable recording, outbound proxying, webhooks or extensions. Create mappings through the authenticated REST API instead.

How do I back up WireMock?

Save mappings first, then back up the wiremock_data volume together with AUTH_USERNAME and AUTH_PASSWORD, restoring both into the same template version. Nothing backs it up automatically, so copy it off the server, and deleting the site permanently removes the volume.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
