What is Duplicati?

Duplicati is a free, open-source backup client that securely stores encrypted, incremental and compressed backups on cloud storage services and remote file servers, released under the MIT licence. Upstream lists AES-256 encryption or GPG, differential backups after the first full one, a built-in scheduler, destinations such as FTP, WebDAV, SFTP and Amazon S3, flexible filters, retention rules and bandwidth limits. Self-hosted Duplicati is the option for people who would otherwise pay a hosted backup service such as CrashPlan.

On xCloud the template runs duplicati/duplicati 2.4.0.0, the stable channel, pinned by digest, as one container with two volumes: duplicati_data for settings and job databases, and duplicati_source for files you back up from or restore into. Duplicati only sees what is mounted into it, so it cannot back up other sites, databases or files on the same server. The dashboard is protected by a password alone.

What is Duplicati used for?

Duplicati is used to back up files to remote storage. You define a job in the dashboard, pick a destination such as S3 or SFTP, choose a passphrase and a schedule, and Duplicati uploads encrypted, deduplicated, incremental backups. It can restore files later from the same dashboard or from a fresh install.

Is Duplicati free and open source?

Yes. The Duplicati core is open source under the MIT licence, although modules under the upstream proprietary directory carry their own licence. The xCloud bill covers the Cloud VPS hosting the client and the deployment. The storage you back up to is billed by its own provider.

Can you self-host Duplicati with Docker?

Yes. For Duplicati Docker hosting the template runs the upstream duplicati/duplicati 2.4.0.0-stable image, pinned by tag and digest, as one container with two named volumes and HTTPS on your domain. It generates the dashboard password and a settings encryption key and restricts the dashboard to this site's domain.

How much RAM does Duplicati need?

Duplicati's manifest floor is 1024 MB of RAM, one core and 10 GB of disk plus room for the local job databases and any files you place in /source. The 6 GB tier on this page leaves headroom.

Which destinations does Duplicati back up to?

Upstream lists FTP, WebDAV, SSH or SFTP, Amazon S3 and S3-compatible buckets, Backblaze B2, Box and many consumer cloud drives. Pick the destination in a job, supply its credentials, and Duplicati encrypts the data with your passphrase before uploading. Check the Duplicati manual for the exact provider list.

Can Duplicati back up my whole server?

No. Duplicati here runs in its own container and only sees what is mounted into it: the duplicati_source volume at /source and any remote sources such as SFTP or S3. It cannot see other sites, apps, databases or files on the same server. To back up a host itself, install Duplicati directly on that machine.

How do I sign in to Duplicati?

Open your HTTPS address and enter the dashboard password from your credentials panel. Duplicati has no username, so the password alone protects the dashboard. The password is applied from the environment on every start, so change DUPLICATI__WEBSERVICE_PASSWORD in the Environment editor and redeploy; a change inside the dashboard is overwritten.

How do I back up Duplicati itself?

Export each backup job's configuration from the dashboard, including its passphrase, and keep the file off-server. With that export and the passphrase, you can rebuild a job on a fresh install and restore. The duplicati_data volume holds settings and per-job databases, and duplicati_source holds your source files.

How do I upgrade Duplicati?

Version 2.4.0.0 on the stable channel is fixed by tag and digest, so catalog updates affect new installs only. Export all job configurations, back up both volumes, read the upstream release notes, then select a later template version. Never change the settings encryption key, or saved destination credentials become unreadable.

What happens if I lose my backup passphrase?

The backups cannot be decrypted. Every job uses a passphrase that you choose, and Duplicati cannot recover it for you, so store each passphrase somewhere outside this install. Run a backup once and use Restore to confirm you can read a file back before trusting the setup.

Can I run Duplicati in the cloud on xCloud?

Yes. Duplicati cloud use puts the client on a dedicated Cloud VPS, with your domain and certificate attached. A server rented from another provider can be enrolled as self-managed. Remember that the install backs up its own source volume and remote locations, not the host itself.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
