What is TaxHacker?

TaxHacker is a self-hosted accounting app for freelancers, indie hackers and small businesses who want to save time on expense and income tracking. A self-hosted TaxHacker lets you upload receipt photos, invoices or PDFs, and upstream describes AI that extracts items, amounts, dates, merchants and taxes into a structured database, with currency conversion, custom categories, multi-project support and import and export. It is MIT licensed, and upstream warns it is still in early development.

On xCloud the install runs TaxHacker 0.8.5 with a private PostgreSQL 17 database and a Caddy gateway, all pinned by digest. The gateway requires HTTP Basic login on every public request, and the instance is single-owner. Three volumes hold taxhacker_db, taxhacker_data for receipts and taxhacker_gateway. No AI provider is bundled: extraction needs your own key and sends documents to that provider.

Can you self-host TaxHacker with Docker?

Yes, and this template is TaxHacker Docker hosting without the setup: the vendor-maintained 0.8.5 image and PostgreSQL 17, both pinned by digest, behind a Caddy owner-login gateway, with three named volumes, generated secrets and HTTPS on your domain.

How much RAM does TaxHacker need?

The template asks for 2 CPU cores, 2 GiB of RAM and 15 GiB of disk as a floor, excluding growth from uploaded documents. PDF processing and external AI calls can briefly use more, so the 6 GB plan is the entry rung.

Is TaxHacker publicly accessible without a password?

No. The template places every public request behind an installation-specific owner username and password, enforced by a Caddy gateway, before traffic reaches TaxHacker or the database. The gateway has no unauthenticated exception for setup, API or file routes.

Does TaxHacker support multiple separate users?

Not in this template. It is a single-owner, private-instance deployment protected by the outer gateway, not a multi-tenant accounting service. Choose your base currency in TaxHacker's setup, and give the one owner login only to people you trust with the books.

Does AI receipt extraction work automatically in TaxHacker?

How do I rotate the TaxHacker owner password?

Generate a new bcrypt hash with Caddy, replace the owner entry in /config/Caddyfile inside the gateway volume, and restart the gateway. Never store the plaintext password in the Caddyfile, and keep BETTER_AUTH_SECRET stable while you do it.

What should I back up on a TaxHacker server?

Back up taxhacker_db for PostgreSQL, taxhacker_data for uploaded receipts and application data, and taxhacker_gateway for the owner password hash and Caddy configuration, together as one consistent set, plus the secret configuration in an encrypted backup.

How do I upgrade TaxHacker?

TaxHacker 0.8.5 and PostgreSQL 17 stay pinned until you adopt a newer template version. Quiesce writes, dump PostgreSQL and archive the data and gateway volumes first, then read the upstream release notes. Existing sites are not upgraded automatically.

Is TaxHacker free?

Yes. TaxHacker is open source under the MIT licence, so the software has no licence fee. Your costs are the dedicated Cloud VPS and any AI provider usage you switch on, which xCloud does not bill.

Is TaxHacker a tax-filing service?

No. TaxHacker is accounting-record software for tracking income, expenses and receipts, not a tax-filing or tax-advice service. Upstream also says the project is in early development and to use it at your own risk, so keep independent records.

Is there a TaxHacker cloud service?

Not through this page. Your books live on a Cloud VPS that xCloud prepares, with the database and receipts on volumes you own, behind an owner login that only you control, and no vendor account in between.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
