What is LetterFeed?

LetterFeed is a self-hosted application that transforms your email newsletters into RSS feeds. It periodically scans your inbox over IMAP for new mail from the senders you have configured, processes it and adds it as an entry to that sender's feed. Run on your own server it is a self-hosted LetterFeed, a way to read newsletters in a feed reader instead of an inbox, in the spirit of a service such as Kill the Newsletter, with the code under the MIT licence.

On xCloud it is the LetterFeed 0.5.3 frontend and backend, pinned by digest, with a SQLite database on the letterfeed_data volume. The mailbox needs IMAP over SSL on port 993. The interface and JSON API require login, but the Atom feeds are public. Subscribe with the /api/feeds/ address, because the /feeds/ link written inside feed files is not served.

Can I run LetterFeed in Docker?

Yes, and this template is LetterFeed Docker hosting without the setup: the official LetterFeed 0.5.3 frontend and backend images, both pinned by digest, with a SQLite data volume, a sign-in and HTTPS on your own domain.

How much RAM does LetterFeed need?

The template minimum is 256 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 2 GB of disk; idle use measured about 145 MiB for frontend and backend together. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung.

How do I connect my mailbox to LetterFeed?

Sign in, open Settings and add your IMAP mailbox over SSL on port 993. Nothing appears until IMAP is configured. Reading a real mailbox was not exercised in QA, so test it with a sender you know.

What is the LetterFeed feed URL?

Subscribe your feed reader to your domain's /api/feeds/ path followed by the sender slug, or /api/feeds/all for every newsletter. The /feeds/ self link written inside feed files is hardcoded upstream and returns a not-found error.

Are LetterFeed feeds public?

Yes. The Atom feeds under /api/feeds/ do not require login, by design, while the interface and JSON API do. Anyone who knows a feed address can read it, so treat newsletter contents accordingly and avoid tracking private or sensitive senders.

Why do my LetterFeed credentials reset after a restart?

The username, password and secret key are re-applied from the environment on every restart, so edits made only in the app do not stick. Change them in the Environment editor and redeploy. IMAP values set there also override the database.

Is LetterFeed free?

Yes. LetterFeed is released under the MIT licence, so the software carries no fee. The dedicated Cloud VPS holding your feeds and mailbox settings is the only cost, which makes this a LetterFeed cloud of your own.

How do I back up LetterFeed?

Back up the letterfeed_data volume, which holds the SQLite database with settings, the sign-in hash, senders and feed entries. Copy it with the backend stopped, or dump the database file. Nothing schedules the copy for you, so take it by hand.

How do I upgrade LetterFeed?

Nothing changes on its own here. The 0.5.3 images are pinned by digest, so newer releases arrive only when you adopt a newer template version. Copy letterfeed_data beforehand and skim the project's release notes; a redeploy leaves the volume alone.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
