Ensuring optimal backup practices for websites is crucial for restoring your website after disasters like server errors, software malfunctions, hardware failures, or hacker attacks. They serve as a safeguard, enabling you to reduce downtime and promptly restore your website.
xCloud Host always emphasizes on data security of its users and offers optimal backup practices for websites. Let us explore the different backup types, their individual purposes, and why taking a solid backup strategy is crucial.
Recommended Types Of Optimal Backup Practices For Websites #
At xCloud, we suggest three different types of website backups to protect your data. With these applied, you can ensure recovery from even the most severe situations. Here are the types of website backup types:
- Full server backups: are complete backups of your entire server, created on a separate instance at your server providerโs location.
- Remote site backups: Take completely separate copies on a remote storage. (Any S3 storage Provider is supported).
- Local site backups: Taken directly on your server storage.
Full Server Backups #
Full server backups are complete backups of your entire server, created on a separate instance at your server providerโs location.
xCloud offers an option to enable this on the first screen while adding a new server on xCloudโs own provider or Vultr. On top of that, you can enable or disable this from the dashboard after setting up one.
These backups are your quickest solutions to restore your server if you experience any disaster. It is highly unlikely that anyone needs to use these backups for recovery. But, if you need to restore your website once in a while, it can be your go-to solution.
Recommendation:
โข Frequency: We recommend scheduling weekly full server backups.
โข Retention: Keep at least two recent backup versions to ensure recovery options over time. (This depends on your server provider).

Remote Site Backups (Off-Server) #
Regular site backups on your server are great for everyday issues, but what if everything gets wiped out? Remote backups, stored with a different company far away, are your best bet for these big disasters.
Even if your server burns down, your websites can still be restored because the backups are safe somewhere else. It might take a little longer to get everything back up and running, but your business will not be ruined.
With xCloud, you can take advantage of full-fledged remote backup options with any s3 provider and this is more secured.
Recommendation:
โข Frequency: We strongly recommend daily remote off-server backups to ensure the most up-to-date recovery option in case of a catastrophic event.
โข Retention: Maintain a minimum of seven daily backups to cover a full week.

Local Site Backups #
Having backups on your website’s server offers a quick solution if you need to revert a site to a previous state. These backups can be helpful if someone messes up the website and you need to go back to an older version. The backup files are stored in your VPS so you should always keep an eye on your server storage usage. For more safety, we recommend users to use Remote Backup always.
Recommendation:
โข Frequency: Local backups can be performed daily to ensure you always have a recent version available.
โข Retention: Consider keeping backups for the last 3-5 days, depending on your storage capacity.
Note: While local backups are convenient, we always recommend pairing them with remote backups for comprehensive protection.
