Why a Site or Server Deletion Hangs, and How to Finish It Safely

Updated September 27, 2026 · 4 min read

Deleting a site or server in xCloud is usually instant, but it can get stuck at a percentage, show a failed state, or leave a server listed after you already removed it at the provider. Here’s what deletion actually removes, what blocks it, and what to do in each case.

What deletion removes

When you delete a site, the Delete Site dialog lets you choose what goes with it:

  • Site files
  • The database
  • The database user
  • Local backups (off by default — see below)
  • DNS records

Deleting a production site also deletes its staging sites. If you only want to remove one environment, delete that environment directly rather than the production site.

Local backups are kept unless you ask otherwise. The Delete Local Backups option in the dialog is off by default, so your local backups stay on disk after the site is gone. If you’re trying to free up disk space, turn this on when deleting a site, or clear old local backups directly from the site’s Backup settings.

What “Deleting…” and “Site Deletion Failed” mean

While xCloud removes the site’s files, database and other selected items, the site’s card shows a Deleting… progress state. If something prevents it from finishing, the site moves to Site Deletion Failed instead of disappearing.

Site stuck or failed

  1. Wait for the progress page to settle first. A large site with a big database can take a few minutes; don’t assume it’s stuck just because it hasn’t finished in the first minute.
  2. Check for a running clone. If you or a teammate started a site clone from this site, deletion is blocked until the clone finishes: “This site cannot be deleted while a cloning operation is in progress.” Let the clone complete, then delete again.
  3. Sites on AI agent servers (OpenClaw, Paperclip, Hermes, DeepSeek Harness) can’t be deleted on their own — delete the server instead if you want the whole environment gone.
  4. Still failed after that? Contact support with the site domain and what you selected in the Delete Site dialog.

Server still listed after deletion

Occasionally a server stays visible in xCloud after you’ve already destroyed the instance at your provider (or after xCloud’s own deletion). This happens when xCloud and the provider disagree about whether the instance still exists.

  1. Check the instance directly in your provider’s dashboard (Vultr, DigitalOcean, Hetzner, and so on) to confirm it’s actually gone.
  2. If it is, contact support with the server name so the record can be cleared from xCloud’s side. This isn’t something you can fix yourself from the dashboard.

What to send support

  • The site domain or server name.
  • Whether you see “Deleting…”, “Site Deletion Failed”, or a server that won’t disappear.
  • What you selected in the Delete Site dialog (files, database, local backups, DNS).
  • Whether a clone was running on the site around the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I delete my site?

The most common cause is a clone of the site still running — xCloud blocks deletion until the clone finishes. Sites on AI agent servers also can’t be deleted on their own; delete the server instead.

Does deleting a site remove its backups?

Not automatically. The Delete Site dialog has a Delete Local Backups option that is off by default, so local backups stay on disk unless you turn it on. Remote backups are not affected either way.

My server still shows in xCloud after I deleted it at my provider. What do I do?

Contact support with the server name. This happens when xCloud and the provider disagree about whether the instance still exists, and it needs to be cleared from our side.

Still stuck? Contact our support team for any of your queries.
